The non-existent food waste photo

Don’t get too excited. It’s not that I didn’t throw anything away, it’s that I didn’t get a picture. I know…what a let-down.

It wasn’t a horrible week, though. I threw away a moldy peach, and some cilantro pesto. I’d frozen it, and for some reason it tasted weird when I thawed it. I don’t know if something was wrong with it before I froze it or if freezing it compromised the quality. Either way, I didn’t want to eat it!

So once again, I didn’t actually throw any food in the trash(the pesto and peach both got composted) but I still didn’t manage to reach my no-waste goal. I’m starting to wonder if it’s even possible! Sigh. I’m going to keep trying, though, because trying has remarkably reduced my waste output. And as Jonathan pointed out on his Wasted Food blog, improvement(even it it’s not perfection) is always good.

Oh, hey, did I mention that he wrote about me on his blog? He’s a much more famous blogger than I am(he’s been on the Today Show, even!), and I’m pretty excited that he posted about little ol’ me!

Mrs. Green...yes, that is a dilemma. For my purposes, though, I'm counting food waste as anything that was originally edible but that I didn't manage to eat. It's not a total loss, for sure...I'm hoping to have some lovely plants next spring as a result of my compost, but I'd rather have my compost make up of inedible stuff(banana peels, egg shells and the like).

Annie's Granny...yay on the composting! Good job. I don't have a real composter, so I'm kind of jealous! My composter is just a Rubbermaid bin.

And thank you to the rest of you for your encouragement...knowing you guys will be cheering me on and checking in on your really motivates me. :)

Cool beans! How does it feel to be a celebrity?

I am beginning to make headway with my "no food wasted". Now I cook for my dogs and eat their leftovers! No, really...I have two puppies and a husband, and I have begun cooking foods that are good for all four of us. What one doesn't eat, the others will. Plus, I dragged my old composter out of the garden shed and put it to use, so if something does hide from me in the fridge, it will be recycled.

Well, I'm still working on cutting down our waste too. I think it's a gradual process. That said, it sounds like you're making a lot of headway. And the mention was great news! Congrats and keep up the good work.

Gosh - WELL DONE! That's excellent news. You're doing so well. This 'zero waste' is a bit of a weird phrase isn't it? It works on two levels. There is zero waste as in 'nothing goes to landfill and is reused' - in the case of your mouldy food that gets turned into a resource for the compost. And then there is total zero waste in that nothing is 'wasted'. But I guess it begs the question, is it 'wasted' if it provides material for the compost bin.

Oh dear, I'm tying myself in knots on a Sunday morning LOL!

Well done though; that's a great week and keep up the inspirational work :)
