Thankful Thursday | I have scissors!

This week, I am thankful:

that I have work scissors again!

Yay! My new pair arrived to replace the ones I lost:

medical scissors.

Watch out, potassium bags, nicotine patch packages, and colostomy baseplates! I'm armed and ready. 😉

for time to rest and reset

I'm going back to work today, but boyyyy, do I feel better after having had a string of days off.

sunrise over creek.

I took care of some practical stuff, I exercised, I cleaned my house, I made some social plans, and now I feel much less overwhelmed. Yay!

sunrise through trees.

I'm refreshed and ready to go back and take care of my patients. 🙂

An unfortunate spike in flu cases means mandatory masking for all employees right now, but luckily, I am good at smiling with my eyes. So I will still bring cheerful energy to my patients.

that I don't mind the cold

It is so so so much easier for me to go for outdoor walks in January than in July! I do feel a little chilly, especially at the start of a walk, but it never bothers me as much as heat and humidity do.

icy creek.

I was not built for summer weather (which is unsurprising, given my German/Norwegian genetics. I am probably quite literally designed for the cold. ;))

that my yard is now tidy

I have never paid for yard help since I moved here, but I finally cracked and hired my neighbor down the street (who owns a landscaping company) to come and clean up my leaves.

I texted him and said, "Can I trade you some money for some yard cleaning?" And he said yes.

It was kinda expensive, but I didn't even care. I did NOT have time to deal with it, and now my yard is clean without me doing a thing except writing a check.

(I know you can just let the leaves sit and rot, but my lease specifies that I have to keep the yard maintained. So, it's not really an option to, uh, leave the leaves. Ha.)

for my lovely hosting company

As you can see, I was working on a new theme, and I needed a little help with a few things for the migration. So my lovely guys at Deep Roots hosting (formerly called Agathon) helped me out.

I seriously cannot say enough good things about them; they are BY FAR the best hosting company I've ever had.

(Also, please forgive the remaining site issues; I will deal with them when I'm off from work next!)

for my support group friends

My two friends Kristin and Maureen were in a divorcing-a-certain-kind-of-man support group with me back in 2022, and though that group has since dissolved, the three of us have stayed friends ever since.

We all live about an hour and a half from each other (seriously a triangle!), but we text regularly. And we had one of our Zoom catch-ups on Sunday, which reminded me again how much I love them. No one understands you quite like friends who have been through similar difficulties.

zoom call.

You know that Taylor Swift line that says, "At least you know exactly who your friends are; they're the ones with matching scars."? I don't know what she meant by that line, but when I heard it, I immediately thought of my friends who have been through similarly hurtful marriages.

Our matching scars make our friendship special.

that my new-car joy is un-squashable

My Instagram post about my new car has now reached almost 800,000 views (!!!), so of course, there have been a handful of people saying my dream car is stupid, or that my car is ugly.

And it has changed absolutely nothing about the joy my car is bringing me. I still feel wildly happy about my purchase, and no one on the planet could possibly convince me that my car is ugly.

SHE IS BEAUTIFUL. 🙂

(And honestly, 99% of the Instagram commenters have said the same; it has been a wildly supportive comment section!)

that I got to use my sunroof

Yesterday was the first day it was warm enough to actually open my sunroof and oh, I was happy!

sunroof.

I delightedly drove down the highway with the wind tickling my hair feeling like…oh my WORD, I can't believe I finally have a sunroof.

for my new Snoopy shirt from Zoe

I love his ridiculously large bowtie!

Snoopy shirt.

It makes me chuckle every time I look at it!

What are you thankful for this week?

  1. I'm glad you aren't letting those few grumpy comments ruin your joy of your new car. I have a sunroof ( or does Toyota call it a moonroof?), but do not use it much, as I hate the wind messing with my hair while I drive. Different strokes for different folks!
    Thankful for:
    * school starting up again for my kids. I hope to get something done around the house before my semester starts. I bought new shelf paper for the kitchen cupboards back in November, and the rolls sit unused.
*my reluctant scholar of a high school senior passed his classes last semester. I wish he'd didn't have such struggles with school, but he's on track to graduate. Pray that he passes his last 2 required courses this term!
    * my daughter has done okay with her CPAP. She's worn it for well over four hours all but one night, and she seems to have more energy and is more talkative.
    * warm, snuggly cats on cold winter nights.
    * my daughter shared a video of her ultrasound- I have a grandchild on the way! Due in July, so still a long way to go, but what a blessing. She also got a still shot of the baby's feet. I love baby feet ( probably because it's the only thing I can easily identify in an ultrasound!).

    1. No one can rain on my parade! I mean, they can try, but my happiness levels are so high, they repel the rain. 😉

    2. Congrats on the grandchild! Being a grandparent is a wonderful experience.
I love baby feet too! I made sure the newborn photographer took pictures of grandson's feet. DD also made a hand and footprint card for me.

  2. Sharing in your delight about your car. The gift to yourself that keeps on giving.

    Thankful -
    - For a coworker with a Tylenol yesterday when my hip was hurting. It made my day so much better and made me better able to do my job. Pain is so draining.
    - For the true beautiful souls in my yoga class which is kinda yoga kinda support group.
    - That my first day of classes this semester went overall well!
    - That I wasn't fully wiped out physically and mentally even at the end of the workday (miracle).
    - For so many times in my life where the obstacle is the way. So many challenges these past couple years have built my understanding (about the world, toward others). Even when a circumstance is hard or seems negative, the result, or what can come from overcoming the situation, sometimes proves powerful and unexpected.

  3. What a cute shirt--one I could never pull off, but it suits you and your energy perfectly!

I am not a Taylor Swift listener, but that line resonates with me perfectly. During A&P classes I connected with two other lovely ladies, both returning students (though their kids are much younger than mine!), and it turns out we have all had lengthy experiences with *ahem* difficult parents/family members. We still group text nearly daily and it is so nice to be able to talk about the realities of dealing with certain personalities and navigating family responsibilities.

I am thankful for my family; right now we're in a lull with my schooling, as I'm on the waitlist but have been told I will "likely" be invited for the Spring 2027 cohort. DH is fully supportive and figuring out how to move his teaching schedule around so we can have somebody at home with our last homeschooler at all times. I literally could not even be contemplating going to nursing school without his support.

I'm thankful for the warmish weather we're having. It means DH can bike to work, which he prefers over driving, and I've been able to get out and bike as well as the boys.

I'm thankful for the posture correction workout I found via a blog, which--though I've only done it twice so far--feels very good and exactly what I needed for my shoulders.

  4. Love the shirt! I'm glad you got some days to recharge.

    1. I'm thankful for a fun New Year's. I don't usually do anything to celebrate but this year I went to party and a club with my friend then we went back to her house and watched the finale of Stranger Things. It was so much fun!

    2. I'm thankful that I was able to go home early for Christmas ( I worked from home for a few days) and then had a relaxing break to recharge.

    3. I went to the cinema with my sister and some friends to see The Housemaid which was really fun.

    4. I also went to my sister's place and watched a film which was enjoyable:)

    5. I made it to the gym twice this week for strength training and am thankful that I got around to that!

  5. I am thankful for the January thaw this week. I find winter cold and this colder than normal winter very cold. I still spend time outside but I don't like it.

I am thankful my local yoga studio has added Pilates to the class list. The class started in November and this week they added a second class every week. I will need to up my membership level to attend more classes but I am supporting a local studio and the owners and teachers are terrific.I am thankful that the days are getting lighter. I know some morning soon I will go to open blinds at 7:00 and there will be daylight.

I'm thankful that a friend that moved to FL last year is in the area visiting and I will get to see her today.

  6. I didn't realize nurse scissors are angled like that. My new thing to learn for today.

--That the weather has been warm enough for my children to be outside all week. School was canceled because of continuing construction issues in our new building, so we are still on Christmas break. It will be a total of 24 days (assuming we even go back this coming Monday, which is not a guarantee). My kids love this. Me, not so much.

--For the fun my kids have been having with our old mattress. We got a new one and as we were dragging the old memory foam one out the door to put it in the trailer in preparation for taking to the dump, they begged to keep it for a little while. So I now have an old mattress on my porch right outside my front door. This is really trashy, yes, but there have been many games on it, mostly involving using it as a crash pad for daring leaps off the nearby chest freezer and mini trampoline. The dogs have also been enjoying it for naps when there aren't insane children landing on it. 🙂 I will be glad when it's gone, but it has been a good distraction for them.

--That the new mattress seems to be helping my husband's back and my legs. Buying mattresses is so stressful for me, because it can't be returned if I end up not liking it, but I think this one will work.

--For my friend with similarly aged children who is always willing to trade kids as necessary. She brought my son home from a basketball game. I brought her daughter home with me yesterday when she had to work. She gave my son cold medicine at school when I wasn't there. I kept her son at our house overnight and drove him to school early with my son for an FFA trip. Etcetera.

--For a really fun First Communion class with my daughter on Tuesday. Our priest teaches it, and he is the second oldest of 8 siblings. His three youngest brothers are visiting him this week, and he had them come to class and answer questions from the kids. They were really great about it, and the kids loved it. It was very entertaining (open questions from children always are), but also nice to listen to young men --they range in age from 17 to 21--speak so candidly to young children about how what they're learning now in this class will really be something important to them for their whole lives. Hearing that from a teenager lands differently for an 8-year-old than hearing it from us old people. 🙂

  7. I’m thankful for:

    1. My partner’s support of an easy day for me yesterday. Just a few words as she went out the door helped me enjoy my free time rather than filling it with chores.

    2. My son’s voice on the phone last night. His work schedule makes it hard to connect sometimes, and he didn’t have time to talk, but just hearing his cheerful voice was connecting.

    3. My daughter’s happiness when she picked up my granddaughter the other day. GD ran to her and immediately invited her into her play (cutting paper with her new scissors!) and my daughter was delighted. So heartwarming to see.

    4. That my cat’s bout of illness resolved quickly and did not indicate a need for more oral surgery. I love my sweet playful cat and was so happy to wake to her snuggling comfortably on the bed this morning.

    5. Today. I read a quote yesterday about how each day is not one more day, as we tend to think of it, but one less. This shift in thinking has made me more determined to appreciate each day.

And one more: I am thankful for all the helpful advice I received here on Tuesday in response to my question about how to shop secondhand. I plan to try it all!

  8. Thankful for:
For remembering that my Rummy Cube tile holders were in my game box that was going to Goodwill. The weather has been so bad I was not able to drop my boxes off.
That my replacement at work will start soon. 🙂
Once retired I will be thankful if I wake up not feeling well and I know I won't have to go to work regardless of how I feel! I do payroll so my life revolves around pay dates. Payroll does not care if you are ill.
When it is sunny and warm I can take my dogs for a walk without having to tell my boss I am going to be late. She is ok with this, she is very flexible.
Thankful to not have to drive on the expressway that has more pot holes than it does cement (think Michigan).

  9. That I discovered the laundry room problem when the plumber was already here for something else, that I found it before he left, and that it was so simple that he didn't charge me (the drainage pipe was dislodged from the drain).

That my aged father bounced back from his cold, which seems not to have done permanent damage to his energy/stamina/general health. I have literally never known him to be under the weather (cold, flu, etc) so I was worried.

That the VA finally adjudicated my roommate as 100% service-related disabled. It took 18 months, including the first, lost, application. The VA generally earns its bureaucratic reputation and recent, um, changes have only deepened the problems without solving any of them.

    1. I am happy for your roommate. The VA is extremely difficult to deal with. It took forever for my MIL to receive her benefits. Did you use a lawyer or specialist for your paperwork?

    2. WilliamB,
I don't have any direct experience with the VA, but have had many patients tell me horror stories. I sometimes wonder if applications get "lost" in the hope the person filing said application will give up. Yay to your roommate for sticking with it!

  10. I’m thankful for the extended school break and the extra time with my family. It makes me sad when the kids go back to school, but they were ready! They’ve been happy with their first week back, so I’m also grateful for that.

I’m thankful my teenage son and pre-teen daughter still readily tell me about their day at school. I love hearing about friends, classes, and the random stuff that happens during the day.

This probably sounds weird to others, but I’m thankful the vet had extended boarding space for our dog this spring break. I had to add a couple extra days to our reservation. Seriously, the whole town is on the same schedule as the university, and I typically have to plan 4-6 months in advance for dog boarding. Good dog sitters can be booked a year in advance!

  11. This week I am thankful:
    * for the great team I serve with on Mondays and Wednesdays. Yesterday was a great show of teamwork and it makes me so happy!
    * for the gift of experience. I had to be "policy enforcer" earlier this week and I truly love avoiding conflict, but it was a lot easier to do now that I'm in my third year in this role.
    * for the way the Lord is taking care of one of my friends who had to make a really hard choice last week.
    * for a clean bathroom! I've put off deep cleaning our master bathroom for too long and this morning I tackled it since my kids' 2-hour delay at school changed my work schedule. It feels good to have it done!
    * for a scary situation turning out OK. Our carbon monoxide detectors went off recently and when we left the house, we assumed that it would be a quick visit from the fire department to say that it was a mistake, but it turned into a whole evening ordeal. It was very unsettling, particularly for two of my children (especially since we couldn't find our cat,) but everything turned out OK. Nobody (pets included) suffered from Co poisoning and we have the money to pay for the off-hours visit from the mechanical company, so I'm thankful. On a side note, it's been funny to see how many adults have come up to ask me about it since they've heard about it from our kids and to hear what the kids have told them. Kids are funny!

  12. I went to the orthopedist on Tuesday, and she said the healing of my ankle, which I broke nearly three weeks ago, looks good. She also said I'll be in a walking boot for about another two weeks. Although I'm not grateful for the broken bone, I'm incredibly grateful for a walking boot, which I can remove to sleep, shower, and drive, rather than wearing a cast. And I'm grateful that I can still do most of the stuff I was doing before the injury (except for long walks). It takes more time and effort, but it's all still doable.

  13. I likewise continue to have unquashed joy about my new hybrid SUV with sunroof, and likewise don't care if other people share in my joy, because I have enough to blanket any negativity! (i live in the land of Teslas, BMW's, Mercedes and the like, so my little Toyota SUV likely flies under the radar. 🙂 )

I live near the beach, and I open up my sunroof every single day, other than rainy ones. It, also, brings me so. much. joy. I continue to love my new car!

  14. I have to wonder what would possess a person to make disparaging, nasty comments on someone's new car? What horrible, sad lives they must be living. It's one thing to say, ''I had a very similar car and did not love it because (insert reason)'' it doesn't have to be an echo chamber of cheerleading, but why be pointlessly unkind?

A question for the ages! I myself would love LOVE a new car just like that and am salty that this is not in my immediate future!

  15. This week I am thankful:
*that my in-laws are here right now. I love them.
*that I finished my homeschool portfolios and submitted them EARLY. And they were accepted 🙂
*for read aloud time in our homeschool. It's my favorite. We call it "together time," and it does bring us together in so many ways.
*that my dryer is fixed. That might have showed up last week, but it's still true.
*that the house is settling back into normal. It's not there yet because not everything has been shifted back after the Christmas tree went out the door, but it's in progress.
*for the fluffy kittens, warm coffee, yummy gingerbread cookies, hearing my youngest son sing country music songs loudly with the radio, that a college boy is learning to make the decisions that are right for HIM, that we received car insurance refunds, and for books.

  16. Let no one rain on your parade! Civics have been around for a long time for a reason.

    1. In a familiar thanksgiving, I’m thankful for the safe return of DD#2 and my granddaughter from their visit to Washington state. They had a wonderful time and I am thankful that her BFF and BFF’s husband enjoy hosting them. They had long days of
flying with some delays, but no worse than that.

    2. I’m thankful that rain is in the forecast and hopeful that it will make it. The drought is severe here.

    3. I’m thankful that my younger dog decided his new bed was safe to sleep in. It took him 3 days to trust it. The older dog went straight into hers with a happy sigh. Their old beds were finally shredding.

    4. I’m thankful to be working three days a week now. Retirement gets closer and closer.

    5. I’m thankful that -so far -the flu has skipped me. All but three of us in the office got it around New Year’s Day. We three are hanging in there!

  17. I hear you! I do payroll as well. I am done with going in feeling poorly or when everyone else is home for the holidays! I planned my life around payroll because there is only so much leeway for getting it turned in. Yay for approaching retirement!!!!

    1. Hey? I commented replying to Mar but it didn’t post with her comment. Could be user error but I don’t think so.

  18. I am thankful that even tho I wasn't feeling all that great this week - just general malaise - I made it to the gym 3 days in a row and the workouts were tough. And I believe I hit a milestone in my weightloss journey, so I am thankful for that. Now to just continue, which should be no problem. I am finding that working out in the AM is what I need to continue and it gets me out of bed. Much easier to rollover and say I'll work out in the afternoon, but when the afternoon gets here, so easy to say, "not gonna go!"

I am thankful that I applied for Social Security on line and I hope everything is in order. It takes 4-6 weeks before you hear back, but I didn't have to make an appointment to go into an office to file for benefits.

Thankful I have't overspent the first week of January also. Watching every penny this year.

  19. I love your snoopy shirt. So fun!

I am glad you can smile with your eyes. When wearing a mask during covid, I remember how difficult it was to communicate with half our faces covered. However, the eyes can be so expressive.

    • I am thankful for my recent family photo session. My children were all visiting for Christmas. My DIL, as a gift to me, arranged a family photo session at the beach with a professional photographer. It is wonderful to have well done photos of all of us together. For this, I am grateful. Time passes too quickly.

    • I am thankful for a quiet beginning to the New Year. It has been wonderful to slow down to rest, to rejuvenate, and put things in order.

    • I am thankful for my life with DH who celebrated his birthday yesterday. We enjoyed dinner at his favorite restaurant and watching a beautiful winter sunset over the ICW.

    • I am thankful that our neighbors finally finished a major landscaping and drainage project which they started two weeks before Thanksgiving. It was a mess and an inconvenience - blocking roadways and driveways, dirt everywhere, the sound of heavy equipment at 7:00am, and strangers all around my house. Rescue Pup and I were most unhappy. Towards the end -- New Year's Eve -- I was starting to lose patience.

Wishing you all a lovely week ahead and the blessings of peace, good health and prosperity.

  20. Super cute Snoopy shirt! Love that color on you as well.
    1) Grateful that we've made it to Thursday in a very long back to work week. Work is... definitely making me earn my salary.
    2) That DS18 made it back to college yesterday. There are logistics with getting him to & from the airport, as well as checking a bag, etc. All good things for him to learn to do, but he has less traveled experience when the unexpected happens.
    3) That DS19 seems to be enjoying his new classes this semester and has a good balance of days/hours of class to get work done.
    4) For easy dinners. I went with spaghetti & meatballs 2x this week, thanks to frozen meatballs & pantry pasta & sauce. Tonight will be chicken parmesan, from the freezer. This week is hard enough without adding in elaborate meal prep.
    5) We had some lovely sunshine yesterday, after a lot of rain. I really enjoyed the cheerfulness of the weather, and was able to get out & walk around the neighborhood a bit.

  21. Kristen - so glad you are enjoying your dream car and riding with the sunroof open. I rarely open mine but I do pull back the shade so I can see the sky. That makes me happy, particularly on long drives.
    This week I'm thankful:
    - I have been able to convince my husband to take a daily walk with me (and the dog) when I get home from work. He has major health issues, so we have to walk slowly but I'm happy to get him out and moving more.
    - Our weather has been unseasonably warm, making our walks more pleasant.
    - My return to work has been fairly easy, even though I was not excited about coming back after being off for 2 weeks.
    - I reduced my work hours, so I am off on Fridays. It's nice to have a 3-day weekend each week. With my reduced schedule, I think I can hang on for 3 more years until I retire.
    - I have plans with BFF after work. I haven't seen her in person since before Christmas.

  22. Thankful, along with K D and others, for the thaw we're currently enjoying. I got out yesterday for some much-needed shopping, including a long, leisurely cruise of the Salvation Army superstore at the foot of my hill.

Thankful for the various small finds I did make at the SA, and thankful that I could restrain myself from unnecessary purchases ("You have one like that already," etc.).

And thankful for Willie Nelson. The New Yorker just ran a long article about him, and my respect for him and his long life of music and service has only increased. A CD of his "16 Biggest Hits" was one of my SA finds yesterday, and I greatly enjoyed listening to it.

  23. This week I am thankful…
    • I had over two weeks off for the holiday break, and for most of that I did not have to take PTO. I was able to rest, reset, and enjoy family and friends.
    • My son was able to fly to see his dad’s side of the family over his winter break. He only gets to see them a few times a year so this was a treat.
    • I set four goals for the year that have really got me inspired! I have so much to look forward to this year!
    • My office brought in a coffee cart to celebrate our first week back – free delicious coffee is always uplifting.
    • One of my coworkers from another department gifted our team a puzzle – we keep a puzzle going at all times for brain breaks.
    • So far tensions have not boiled over in my metro area. Minneapolis once again made the news for another tragedy and it breaks my heart. Our community is so beautiful and loving and sadly that is not what makes the news.
    • For all of the stories I have been hearing of people supporting their Minneapolis neighbors – opening their homes to kiddos now that schools are closed for safety, parents giving kiddos rides to and from school because of fears of ICE, people from all backgrounds coming together to support each other. These are the stories that should be heard.

    1. Geneva, as a fellow Twin Citian, I agree with your shout-outs. We are community with a capital "C" -actually all caps! I'm also thankful for bystander videos.

  24. - I'm thankful for Taylor Alison Swift, The Eras Tour documentary and recordings, and that she likes her friends canceled. 😉
    - I'm thankful for kind ER room nurses and doctors.
    - Also thankful for folks who mask in hospitals and elsewhere.
    - Thankful for Tamiflu.
    - Thankful for good health insurance.
    - Thankful for a remote job that understands that being in the ER til 3 am with your partner who has FluB means my early morning TEAMS meetings will be held with the camera off and that I'm going to be taking a wee nap mid-day.

  25. I like the new layout of the blog. It looks good.
    Thankful:
all my bloodwork came back good from my doctor's visit this past week
for my cats that make me laugh daily
for a quiet home that is 99% stress free
my son started using vaseline on the pad beneath his thumbs on the palm of his hands that have suffered with extreme eczema for years. He's tried prescriptions and every cream for eczema there is, but after about a week of vaseline...his hands are healed up for the first time in almost 2 years! I'm so thankful for that.
the Libby app. I use the free Libby app from the library every day. It makes yard work and walking sooo much better.

  26. I love your Snoopy shirt!
I'm thankful that the cortisone injection I had in my spine on Tuesday seems to be helping.
That my elderly dog is doing well on the medication and supplement regimen we've devised for him. He has another check-up tomorrow and we may fine-tune some things.
For the snow we're getting today. We have had such a dry, warm winter that the local ice festival was cancelled and the ares ski resort has just a couple of puny runs of mostly man-made snow. We usually get several feet of snow each winter, so this is very concerning. So far we only have an inch on the ground but I'm praying for more.
For the firewood we got this summer that is keeping us so cozy and warm now.
For the sewing and knitting projects I'm working on.

  27. Ignore the naysayers! I love my Honda CR-V. She’s old enough to vote and drink (in Canada) 🇨🇦 We had an Accord as well that was finally passed down to the kids. I always felt safer with them in a Honda. Enjoy!! 😉

    1. Thanks for the "She's old enough to vote and drink" statement. My Nellybelle, the 2010 Element, will be there in a couple more years.

  28. The new website layout is very nice! I also like Snoopy's pink bow.
*Walking in the chilly air feels clean to me (however below freezing is a bit of a challenge)
*18 lovely days in Florida with son and his family.
*Kids planning a family gathering this summer.
    *Book club tonight.
*Long distance phone calls with friends. Several of my closest friends live far away so I appreciate that long distance calling rates have gone the way of the dinosaur. And that my friends prefer actual conversation in addition to texts.
    *Thankful Thursdays!

  29. My first thankful is for finally buying a back support brace from Walmart. My back has been hurting at work for at least two months, and support/sympathy from my boss has been non-existent. Local ER gave me oxycodone which made me hurt worse, and lidocaine patches that I had nobody to put on. After buying the brace I've had 3 shifts (8 to 10 hours each) with ZERO pain.
Second thankful is for my crazy cat that I've had for about 2 months. He makes me laugh every day.
#3) not enjoying slick roads BUT I much prefer cold weather over hot weather.
    4) in about 14 months I will be retired 😀
    5) slowly losing weight and getting healthier

  30. Thankful that:
    1. The temperatures moderated for two days, enabling the husband to do some poop pickup in the backyard. It is 37 below as I write this, but for two days it was only 20 below so we had a little break.
    2. Someone gave me a gift card to the local bakery so I could buy our challah instead of trying to find the energy to make it. Edible gifts are best at this time in life.
    3. Although a lot of small papers have gone out of business or been consolidated under a corporation that does not allow independence of thought, we still have some papers that can pay for investigations into what no-good-nik politicians and companies are doing. I am happy to pay for three internet subscriptions, to keep independent investigative journalism alive.
    4. A friend flew up from Seattle and brought a dozen persimmons with her!! I love them and most years we don't get any up here at the end of the food road.
    5. The husband, always the husband.

    1. I smile every time I read your “the husband, always the husband.” What a positive connection you must have.

    2. Hey Lindsey, it’s sumo season! There were 43 crews picking sumos yesterday here in Central California. Our close friend oversees them all, and he brought us some yesterday. I thought of you. 🙂

  31. Thankful Thursday always seems to roll around just when I need a dose of gratitude. This week I am thankful . . .

-that I have (so far) survived breast cancer. In the day to day it is so easy to get annoyed about this little thing and that little thing. But if not for the miracle of medical care, I would be dead right now. Every day I get to talk to my children and walk around in the world is a blessing.

-for all the work we have coming in right now. Our business took a major hit from my breast cancer. We have spent the last year rebuilding, and we have been lucky to bring in a few high-quality clients. I get impatient to quickly get back to where we have been in the past, and I often want to blow everything up and start from scratch. But I remind myself the best path to get to where we want to be is to carefully build on what we already have. And that takes time.

-for how quickly I recovered from pulling my back out last week. I spent about 24 hours in extreme pain, but then I quickly started feeling better. I did go to the physical therapist this week, and even he was impressed with how well I was feeling. Now I am sore from the stupid exercises he gave me. But now I know this too shall pass.

-that I am starting to get into "flow state" with the syllabus and lecture planning I am finishing this week. I start teaching on Tuesday! I kept trying to work on this syllabus in December, but just couldn't make my brain focus. Earlier this week I imagined I would show up to class and say "well, I've got nothing. let's all go home," but now it is starting to click together. None too soon!

  32. - I am thankful to have inspiration from your joy of the winter cold. Previously, I have dreaded January/February, but this year I am doing my best to get out and enjoy the small joys of nature: a few remaining berries here and there, little buds waiting to pop with the warmth, calling of songbirds who seem less bothered by the cold.
    - I am also thankful for my hiking buddy. Winter is the best time to avoid snakes and spiders here, and she inspires me to get out every couple of weeks.
    - I am thankful for the SRCA benefit that has allowed us to get several credit cards (which we pay off every month) with really nice perks and points.
    - I am thankful for my MIL's surprisingly hearty response to my request for book recommendations. Sometimes I feel like I do a poor job of connecting with her, and it made me so happy to see what she shared.
    - I am thankful, as always, for my remote job that allows me to work no matter where my husband is sent.

  33. Whyyyyy would anybody waste the time and effort to tell you that your car is ugly? Maybe they would be happier (and more positive) people if they found a volunteer position to help others, instead of bringing other people down.

Anyway. Thankful for a safe commute today--we had freezing fog, which resulted in icy roads (which looked deceptively clear). Yikes.

Thankful for kindness at work--a coworker unexpectedly passed away last Saturday, and our team is making a big effort to make sure that everyone feels supported. I didn't know her well, but she was my age, and it was a big shock.

For my husband, who consistently picks up the pieces to help our lives run smoothly.

For my new sweatshirt--it's a congratulatory gift for my 25 year work anniversary.

For the kids and the cats (all of whom make me laugh).

  34. Cold weather edition:
That choir rehearsal and a concert did not go ahead, because of the slush and forecast for more snow and frost.
That pictures of snowmen and bellsleighing keep me distracted from distressing international news.
That our stocking habits have kept us well fed.
That my persistent cold seems to improve.
That I thrifted a Norwegian sweater last year and also found my Nikita hat again. Toasty warm!

  35. All the nurses I've worked with managed to connect their scissors to their uniforms in one way or another. Try one of those retractable badge leashes connected to a safety pin on your srubs.

I didn't get my Toyota Corolla until my eldest was 8 and I had a new baby. The old car had manual windows--what a Pain with a young child in the back seat!!!! For the 18 years I drove my new Corolla I felt grateful every time I had to roll a window up or down. Now my new baby is 25 and still driving that car! And I'm still thrilled with and thankful for the new bells and whistles on my now 7 year old car--steering wheel controls for things like Apple Car Play and the sun/moon roof.

  36. I am nothing if not transparent. Monday was a rather challenging day because 1) As I was driving home from work, I thought something was wrong with my car only to find out the road was icy. I am thankful I made it home in one piece. I could not tell by other drivers that the roads were icy. Vrooooom!!!! 2) I responded incorrectly to a virus that popped up on my computer and after three days of undoing the damage (some will never be undone. I can only hope someone in a third world country is benefiting from my gullibility, but in the end, I serve a Mighty God and He sees and knows all.) I am thankful the damage was not as bad as it could have been.
I'm thankful I filled up w gas on Monday as I have run a lot of errands the last four days.
I am thankful for new glasses and that I had paid the total before my "challenges" this week. I am amazed that I can see better with my left eye.
I am thankful for the rain we received today. Our coffers were somewhat depleted and it will be good for spring growth.

  37. I think your car's great! It looks so zippy! I have a Honda, too (a Fit, not a Civic) and I love 'em. Good cars and yours is very cute. Pooh on the haters.

  38. Today I am thankful for:

This very cozy fluffy throw I am cuddling under as I write this.

The warm temperature today and the miraculous absence of snow after a horrific start to winter.

That my sister, who is a recent widow, is getting so much help from neighbors. I can't be there. I'm so glad others are.

Aldi. I can find what I need, and it isn't overpriced.

My community center. I walk there, I take free classes, I use the branch library within. I love it that staff members greet me warmly, and it feels real.

Jeopardy! I rarely miss a day.

  39. I’m thankful that:
    1. my website is working again after 2 days of nonfunctionality and hours on the phone. (email still broken)
    2. we found a great pastor after limping along for several years
    3. for a husband that keeps the house warm, fixes dinner, and does my errands when I am trapped on the phone.

    Beautiful new web design, Kristen!
