I recently wrote about how Mr. FG and I have a two-iPhones-for-$21/month plan, which is working out really, really well for us.
(Actually, last month we paid $18 because we managed not to use any data!)
Although I didn't originally have any relationship with Ting, after I posted about our experience with Ting Wireless, the people from Ting emailed me and asked if I'd like to give a smartphone away to you guys.
And of course, I said yes because I really love Ting's uber-flexible, super-inexpensive service, and because if I were you, I would want to win a smartphone!
(By the way, Ting runs on the Sprint network, so if you've got good Sprint coverage in your area, Ting will work great for you.)
The Phone
The smartphone Ting is offering for this giveaway is a Kyocera Rise. I haven't personally used one of these, but it's an Android Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone (I have no idea what that means!) and it has a slide-out qwerty keyboard.
And it's all set to use on Ting's rockin' plan, so you can get busy slashing your cell phone bill right away.

I would save $20.00 a month and $240.00 a year and I currently don't even have a smartphone. Its a qwerty phone with data capability so a phone I could use for money saving apps would be really fun for me. We have found with my husband and daughters smart phones adding our WIFI password to them saves a fortune on data! I would love to have a ting phone and service for myself!
Yes! We love using wifi...it's available in so many places now and cuts our data usage to almost nothing.
The savings I calculated was just for me. I guess the actual savings monthly would be 100.00 a month including the other 4 phones on the account!

I totally get where your husband is coming from. He wants to feel like he can rely on the network to work wherever and whenever he needs it. The good news is Ting runs off of the Sprint network. In fact, we purchase minutes, texts and data directly from Sprint, so he wouldn't have to worry about not getting the same coverage.

We don't have smart phones (just talk and text), but I've been looking into adding data to our plan. If we did, Ting would save us about $40 a month! I'm definitely going to look into this service (and I would love to win the phone!)
We have 3 on our plan, we were paying 2520 annually, switched to a non-contract plan and we are down to 1524 annually not including a phone (we are keeping our old ones) this is with the shared data plan with a company discount using AT&T. Ting would still save me another $25 per month as I typically only use my phone when I am in WiFi areas. I am not sure I can live without my iPhone features though. I have several apps like Evernote that I use daily. I wish Ting accepted more phones.
My understanding is that Ting does accept iPhones! It just has to be Sprint compatible. I believe Kristin purchased a refurbed iPhone 4 and is using it on Ting!! 🙂
Yes, we currently accept the 4, 4s and 5! They must be Sprint-enabled iPhones.
The savings calculator says I wouldn't save any money, but I currently do not have a smartphone and would really like one.
We've got a bunch of great smartphones to choose from. I could even help you out if you need help! Realistically, if you use wifi when you can, your bill could be as low as $20 per month (or less).

It's not quite an accurate comparison, but the savings calculator says I'm in the 2% who wouldn't save by switching. I'm on a $30 per month pre-pay plan with my old-fashioned flip-phone (no data) and my husband gets by on the pay-per-minute & doesn't use up a $100 card in a year. We are intrigued by Ting, though, as we may be looking to move to a smart-phone in about a year or so for traveling purposes & money-saving-deals via smart-phone.

Thank you Kristen! I would probably use more data than you, but would still save between $100 and $120 per month. A free phone may be the thing that convinces my husband to make the switch (I've been talking it up since your original post a few weeks ago).

We already have ting and we save about $80 a month from our old plan. Ting says we would save over $2000 over a 2 year plan. We love Ting and I really love that I can control how much we pay and we only pay for what we use. We don't have a land line, so we use our phones as phones. Because some months are much heavier phone usage months than others, I really like that I never have to worry about how much I talk to my family.

Me! I switched to Ting back in May and save, on average, $50/month. I desperately need a new phone as mine is the ORIGINAL Samsung Galaxy S and, while I adore it and ported it to Ting NO PROBLEMO, it is old and is starting to freeze often/not want to charge any more. Okay, so this is lame -- I already use Ting and my last bill was $1.95 (I had credit). But, I still have two lines with Sprint that I am planning to port to Ting and will save $110 month total with all three lines on Ting. Can I still be a part of the giveaway?
When I used Ting's calculator, I would pay the same compared to what I pay now; but I plan to switch, talk less on my cell, and text less. This will allow me to save more, and I will have a phone upgrade with a smart phone 🙂

My husband has been pushing a lot lately for us to join the rest of you in the 21st century and get a smartphone, so we have already looked at Ting based on posts over at Mr. Money Mustache.
The initial cost of the phone was my main "hang-up " about not signing up, so a free phone would mean there wouldn't be much reason for us not to finally get a cell phone. The monthly fees are very reasonable.
Me too Susan. We have tracfone and pay about $20 every 3-5 months for the both of us. However, I would love to do a smartphone and this is a cheap way for us.

Well I could save over 2500/year with 4 phones. That's crazy and worth a look. We have 4 iphones now so I might have to calculate the cost of all new phones to see the true cost. Several of the phones are up for renewal in January so I'd love to look into this more.
My only reservation is that my oldest child is a college student in Gambier,Ohio. They say that only Verizon works in that area (as it is rural). I'd love to test it there of find out if this will work in that area as this is the only reason we're staying with Verizon now.

I just wanted to stop by and put a plug in for Ting for all of you who may be on the fence. I am a recent convert from Verizon and just brought over 3 other family members onto my monthly plan. The cell service works great in my area and I must say, Ting customer service is BAR NONE. I have never felt more valued as a customer. Any questions I have had about porting our numbers over, phone compatibility, etc. have all been answered by real people at lightning speed. Highly recommend!
We won't actually save anything, because we currently have phones through Republic Wireless. However, we're moving to Arizona in November and Republic won't work out there (yet!).
I no longer have any cellphone, smart or otherwise, as I couldn't afford to keep mine. Instead, I use a landline because, bundled with my internet/wifi, it's less costly. Nevertheless, I would love to be able to have a cellphone again, and a smartphone?! Amazingly, with Ting I'd probably pay about $25 each month less than I used to pay for the phone feature. I didn't add any data usage as I'd do my best to keep that at a minimum, using wifi as much as possible.

I don't currently have a cell phone at all, but this my parents keep telling me to get one. So this looks like a smart way to have a phone for emergencies without paying a lot.
Honestly, our only cell phone right now is an old tracfone that gets more use as an alarm clock than a phone, so we wouldn't save anything on service by switching. Having a smart phone would help me to manage my Etsy shop when I'm away from home and save money when I forget to print out my Joann's coupons, though. That alone would justify spending $20/month on service with Ting, lol!

I estimated pretty generously but it said I could save 92$ each month. If I saved even half that I would be very, very happy!
I calculated it for a 5-phone Verizon family plan, (4 basic no-data phones and 1 smart phone) which receives a discount through work...came up that we are in the 2% who would not save on their monthly bill. All of that could change if one of us "basics" switch to a "smart," so I will look into that again. Especially if we win the free one! Duly noting the following: "Even if your expected Ting bill is about in line with your current mobile bill, Ting's no contract service and unprecedented no-hold customer service are priceless. Also, we don't hit you with bogus recovery fees or other line items in your bills; we only collect the taxes and regulatory fees we're legally required to collect and pass on to the Powers That Be." (Verizon charges us $10.80 "surcharge"...but even with that added in we are still in the 2%...must be that work discount.
Just figured out by useage analysis that we can safely lower our "shared minutes" and save on upcoming bills with Verizon!

My parents and I were JUST talking about this last night! I had never heard of them til you posted about them. My parents currently pay about $145 a month for two phones and I pay $95 for two phones. So between us, we are talking $240 a month! Since we have different carriers I used the rates to estimate. With a four line plan, and averaging the minutes, texts and data we use, I'm estimating that we would save $174!!! ONE HUNDRED SEVENTY FOUR DOLLARS! If I win this phone will go to my dad, and I'll then only have to buy 3 more for myself, my son and my mom, so that will mean a lot to me!

Our phones aren't Sprint phones so we would have to get two new phones. If I add in the cost of two refurbished Galaxy SIIIs at $296 each and then subtract the amount I could probably get for my hubby's phone on Glyde (mine is not paid off yet) we would save $253.40 in 2 years ($10.56 per month). This is enough to make me consider it even though it would be a hassle.
My husband uses a pay-as-you go flip phone like Kristen's old phone. Switching to Ting would save us at least $13.00 per month, which would be nice!

I'd save around $15 dollars a month for my current situation, which is a part of a family plan with my dad. When I have to get my own plan I'm sure the savings would be 10x more.
My results say that I am in the 2% who would not save by switching to Ting. However, there are 4 phones on our plan and only my husband's is a smartphone and the other three users don't text or receive texts. We also get a 15% discount through my husband's job. I've been planning on getting a smartphone so we'd probably save at that point. I'd really like a smartphone!

I guess it wouldn't be much of a savings since I don't have a cell phone at all. I did check out the rates and told my mom she could save at least $55 though. She pays way too much!
We (my wife and I) would not save anything, but that's because we currently have flip phones and I use next-to-nothing on my portion of the prepaid plan. BUT, we would like to get phones where we could use data if we want, and this Ting plan fits the bill. And a free smartphone would really end any doubt I have about it!
It'd be an increase for us because we're paying less than $25/month for two non-smart phones. BUT, of course, we'd then have texting and occasional internet capability, so value-wise, it does make a smart phone sound a lot more plausible.
Plus, I suppose we could benefit from upgrading just one of them, and not being able to text is starting to become socially awkward... You actually have me considering this 🙂

I don't have Ting in my area (we have Virgin Mobile as our pre-paid Sprint affiliate), but I do have a Kyocera Rise, so I can let you all know that it's a good phone. I've had it for about a year, and I have no reason/desire to upgrade, even if (in the smart phone world), it's a bit "outdated." The qwerty keyboard is really good if you use it for texting or surfing the web a lot, and it has wi-fi capability, so like Kristen does, you can really limit your data usage by activating that. My only qualm is that it tends to freeze up a lot if you use a lot of apps. My husband and I have the same phone (both Kyocera Rises, not the *same* phone), and I use more apps than he does, so mine freezes up probably once a day, whereas I don't think his has ever frozen up.

Wow! We would save $28 a month, that's over $672 in 2 years. (If I calculated correctly. We have 3 phones and I divided them up on the "calculator.") I'm just not certain out area has Sprint availability since we live in a rural area. This would be great for my daughter as I am one of those mean parents who don't believe children under 14 should have their own cell phone, but do see the value of having one they can use when away from home.

Well, needless to say, I wouldn't be saving ANYTHING. Why? Because my husband and I do not have any cell phones at all-- heck we just made the jump to cordless a couple of years ago! 🙂 Maybe we would if we had the smart phone... less home phone?? Ting says I would save $72 a month. That's for the first cell phone on our plan...the second one would probably involve less savings. It's tempting!
We have saved over $100 per month since switching. I can't believe how much we use to spend on cell service. I watch our usage very closely now so we don't go over any minutes/texts.

We are actually saving up to switch to Ting when our current contract ends in a few months (we'll need to buy Sprint devices). We would save $103 a month. That is not chump change!!
We are going to be saving like 140 a month (paying about 60 a month for what we currently use) and about 3360 in savings over a two year period! We are so switching!

It would take my Tmobile bill from $91/month to $64 (plus taxes)--not bad at all! I'm sure the first year, we'd come out even due to buying phones, but it is definitely worth it!

I would save $1493.28 over two years and more if I sell my current phone. My biggest concern would be reception. I'm in a more remote area and my cell is the only phone I have so if the signal was bad, I'd be out of luck in an emergency.
Since I don't have a smart phone, it's not that I would save that much, but I would just so love to have data access. The calculator said we would save about $1400, but I think that's a stretch. However, if we could have data access for the same price, I would be very happy.

I have been desperately needing to switch something and save some money. We are currently with Sprint, but are spending way too much! I have already talked to my husband about Ting. According to my estimates we would save over $200 a month. My husband has a very old blackberry and wants to update so it sounds like Ting is just what I have been hoping for. I only have a prepaid TracFone (for the last 3 yrs) that I pay $10/mo for something like 800 minutes per year, no data (some texts). According to Ting's calculator, it would actually cost me five dollars more per month, but I'd be willing to do that to upgrade (and get a free phone). Also, our teenage son will be driving in a year or two, and I'd like him to have a phone. So please enter me in the drawing!

I don't have a smart phone. I can't do anything but make calls/texts and have been interested in Ting since I read your blog about it the other week. I would probably switch my son over - and my husband would probably come over too. He gets caps on his data plan and he does not enjoy that as he has to use his phone for work. I don't have a budget for a new phone - otherwise I would have switched already. Thanks!
My husband has one of those pay by the minute plans, so his usage always varies from month to month. But, I would love to see him on a plan where we can plan/estimate what his bill would be, and I think Ting would be great for that. Plus, a new phone would be a big help. His is an ancient flip phone, so, welcome to the 2000's!!

It is difficult to judge exact savings for our family because my kids and I have pay as you go plans with Verizon phones, approximately $90 per month, sometimes more if the kids use up their monthly allotment of paid for minutes. This is with no data, etc. We've outgrown this system, which we set up years ago, so I think Ting would be great for our family, saving us $40-$50 per month.

I'm in the group who wouldn't save. I use less than 30 min a month talk with a flip phone on T-Mobile.
I don't like monthly bills and pay anything I can once a year. I even pay my internet by the year.
I've been using a really crappy but free phone from work. I've wanted to upgrade, but didn't want to spend $60/month like my dh. With Ting at $32 per month, I'd save $28 each month or $336 per year!

No savings here, but that is because we use our phone as a hotspot for home internet. We use over ten GB a month for data! Luckily, we have an unlimited data plan that we got back when there was such a thing. I am still interested in ting for their phones, though!
