Groceries, Menu...

img_4877

I spent $51.85 at Aldi, and at Weis, I spent $20.05(to be precise!). I had a coupon for $8/$50 purchase at Weis, but I just did not need enough stuff this week to justify using that. So, I gave it to an older couple who had a cart full of groceries. 🙂

My groceries added up to $71.90 this week, so I came in under the low end of my budget again...yay!

Breakfast this week will be fruit, cereal, bagels, and hopefully granola(if I find time to make it!). Lunches are a combination of leftovers, yogurt/yogurt smoothies, fruit, veggies and bread/sandwiches.

  1. I got a new issue of Fine Cooking yesterday that has a lot of great recipes, so I'm going to come in on the high end of my budget to get all of the ingredients. Do you ever read Fine Cooking? I've been subscribing for 8 years and I've never had one of their recipes fail me yet! This month there are a lot of good salad recipes that I'm going to try. The only trouble is, I always end up spending a lot on food, because I want to try so many new recipes!:P

  2. I am still amazed how you feed a large family on so little. I do have two questions for you though.
    1) How do you keep your strawberries fresh? We bought strawberries Thursday evening, had some Friday morning and this morning (Saturday) the entire container was moldy. I am beyond upset. Do you freeze yours right away?
    2) Frugal Liz made me think of this one...I have seen you recommend Cooks Illustrated. Do you subscribe to the print or e-zine? I was kind of surprised at their cost and wonder if it is really worth it.
Thanks for your inspiration, ideas and answers!

  3. Calimama-I put them in the fridge right away, or they do get moldy. We do tend to eat them within a few days, though. I keep frozen strawberries on hand for smoothies, since they keep fresh very nicely.

I subscribe to Cook's website. That way you get access to every single recipe and review they've ever done. I think it's $25-$30 a year, but so worth it to me. They review cooking equipment and also foods as well(like they tell you what the best canned tomatoes are). It's so handy when you want to buy kitchen equipment too...sort of like having a kitchen version of Consumer Reports.

I really can't recommend them highly enough. Their recipes are good and they research and test them so thoroughly. I don't think I've come across a dud yet.

And I promise, they don't pay me a cent! lol I just think they rock.

  4. I like I see a spider ... 😀

    The Aussie chicken sounds interesting but I doubt I could get anyone around here to eat it. ^_^;;

  5. And a stingray...didn't you see him on top of the popsicles?

Katy, those are grapes, actually! lol Fresh blueberries are almost always a little too expensive for me. :p

Susan, we had one left from last week...so never fear, we WILL be having root beer with our pizza!

  6. Well...I balanced it out by having a smoothie for dinner.:P Trent at The Simple Dollar inspired me to try brewing my own beer. I can start bottling my second batch in 2 weeks! I don't know if you drink beer, but if you do, brewing your own is pretty fun!

  7. Nope, neither my husband or myself likes beer much. We do drink a bit of wine, but not so much that it would be worth it to do it ourselves(at least I don't think it would be).

  8. Plus, I already do make an awful lot of stuff myself. I think I will just let my husband keep buying a bottle of wine here and there. lol Unless, of course, he wants to take up wine-making himself.
