Food Waste Friday | Oh, veggies

Every week, I post a picture of the food that has gone bad over the last seven days. I started doing this in March of 2008 to help motivate myself to use up my food instead of wasting it and it’s been very effective. Since it helped me so much, I invited other bloggers to join me in posting their food waste photos, and Food Waste Friday was born.

This week, I lost a sweet potato and some chopped up red pepper. I found the mold on the peppers earlier in the week, but I froze them until I could take the picture today (which is why the container is all cloudy looking!).

The sweet potato was in the fridge instead of in the cabinet with the rest of the sweet potatoes, so it didn’t get eaten in time. I was going to try to rescue it and make some sweet potato muffins, but it was just too far gone.

No kidding! Oh well. I did freeze two other peppers yesterday, since they were starting to go soft on me.

Too bad the peppers didn't make it into the freezer before going moldy!

I'll be glad to post the sweet potato muffin recipe. I'll take pictures next time I make them. :)

MomtoGirls-I'd be thrilled to have you join us!

Angela, I thought about that, but this potato was mushy and had moldy spots on it. I've planted potatoes before when they were old and wrinkly and sprouting, but this one didn't seem like it would grow. Then too, it's about to freeze here, so I'd have trouble growing it right about now.

So, it's composting instead.

Sadly, a celery root I was going to make into soup- waited too long and it got mushy. Hard to stick with THE PLAN every single day...

I remember when I had a sweet potato go bad, which was a rare occurence, and a lot of people said I should stick it in the ground (plant it).

This is a great idea. Being new to your blog, I don't have any waste to report. I'm sure I've tossed a bit already this week. I will clean my fridge next Friday with this in mind.( I do it once a week anyway). I'm so excited to share this idea with my husband and girls. Thanks momtogirls
