Dear Safeway,

IMG_6181

Could you please have a flour sale soon? Because this is the very last Gold Medal flour bag from my Christmas and Easter stock-ups at your store, and my flour stash is in desperate need of replenishing.

I was thinking something along the lines of the $.99/5 lb sale you had last year would be good.

Thank you.

  1. Do you have an Albertson's nearby? 10 for 10 on Pillsbury flour... and how do you store it when you stock up on it? I am very curious to know.

  2. $0.99 for 5lbs? The best we can get it for out here is $5 for 5lbs! I cross the border into NY and get it at Walmart for $2.50. Of course, I'm a King Arthur Flour guy. I was so excited to see the baker's store during my VT vacation. It's like a baker's paradise.

  3. @Safeway Seriously? Is someone from Safeway commenting on MY blog? I didn't think anyone would actually see my silly note.

In that case, could I specify that I would really like unbleached flour to be included in the sale? lol The bleached stuff just isn't the same.

Julia, Pillsbury is 2 for $4 here right now. Can I come live with you? 😉

Battra, Gold Medal unbleached is my fave. King Arthur is great, I'm sure, but it really doesn't fit into my budget. If I was single, I could swing it, but I can't afford KA while baking for 6 people!

  4. In our Safeway (CA) we have 2 bags of Gold medal 5 lbs for $3 this week. So $1.50/5 lbs. I was so happy to see this....so go check your flyer today!

  5. Nan, oddly enough, right after I posted this, I walked out to get the paper, and I saw the same ad you're talking about! I'm so buying some. My only worry is that it's the bleached and not the unbleached, but I will at least check it out.

  6. At Fred Meyers (Krogers to you?) they have a coupon in the Sunday ad for store brand flour 4/$5. They are 5lb bags. Or you could get vegetable oil with the same coupon. Im there with ya when it comes to flour. Unbleached or whole wheat all the way! Fred Meyer's carries bleached flour in 5lb bags but not unbleached. They only carry the unbleached in 10 lbs but no sale. So weird. So I passed on this deal. Will have to check out Albertsons for the flour as someone stated.

  7. How do you store the flour to ensure it stays fresh? I'd love to stock up the next time I see a sale, but I'm nervous about storage.

  8. This is so funny- I JUST got home from the market, where they had the unbleached Gold Medal on sale, but I realized I've always used the white package, which I always thought of as "all purpose" but it's also bleached.

What's the difference between "bleached" and "unbleached" and all-purpose and self-rising? Can you use unbleached for the same recipes if you've always used bleached? If you use the self-rising, do you have to cut the baking powder or baking soda out of cookie and bread recipes?

  9. Angela, bleached flour is, well, bleached! It's a lot whiter than unbleached flour is. And for some reason, when Cook's tested flours, the unbleached was a lot better for bread. I think the bleaching affects the flavor some too.

Bleached and unbleached can be used in the same recipes, though, without too much change in the result.

Self-rising flour has baking soda and baking powder in it, but I'm not entirely sure of the proportions. Because of that, I'd be leery of using it in any recipe that doesn't specifically call for it.

I never buy self-rising flour. I figure that it's more than easy to add my own baking powder and baking soda!

  10. Found your website yesterday and am really enjoying it. So funny to read your flour plea. It has been on my mind as well so I was especially thankful when it went on sale today (Pillsbury, all types) for 99 cents a bag at Harris Teeter (NC) I guess I should consider myself lucky. And I'm with you, I prefer unbleached.
I'm also holding on to two Gold Medal coupons for 50 cents off that I printed here:
http://www.eatbetteramerica.com/coupons/. Hoping for a great deal real soon. Lucky for me, we live in the land of doubles (every day) and triples once a month.

  11. I love unbleached Gold Medal also. King Arthur is great too but I only buy that when it is a great sale. Right now my local Pricerite has unbleached Gold Medal for $1.79. They only carry it around the holidays, so every week I buy two 5 lbs bags to stock up. I store my flour in my freezer. I normally have enough room to store it. If I run out of room, I just leave it in the freezer for 24 hours to kill any eggs or stuff in the flour and then put the bags in a storage tub. This works for me!

  12. Can I be the third person to pester you and ask about how you store the bulk flour? I make the no-knead bread a few times a week and usually use the same flour you do. I never buy more than a bag or two at a time even if it is on sale.
How do you store your bags to keep them fresh and bug free?

  13. Have you considered the 25lb bags? I don't use all that much flour but I am thinking of starting to buy stuff in bulk.

Costco has the only price I can really find online and they are selling 25lb bags of ConAgra AP for $7.10. That's $1.42 a 5lb bag sure but when you get caught it might not be so bad.

  14. Lindsay :How do you store the flour to ensure it stays fresh? I'd love to stock up the next time I see a sale, but I'm nervous about storage.

I keep mine in the freezer.

  15. Do you have a Shoppers Food near you? You can get 11 bags for $1.42/ea after the promo they're running right now. Plus there are .55 printable coupons at BettyCrocker.com.
