What I bought, what I spent, what we ate

It's grocery report/menu day!   Let's jump right in.

What I Bought

Well.

I may have stopped at the produce stand again.

And I may have, um, bought 50 more pounds of bruised apples.

I seriously have to stop now because my freezer is getting pretty jam-packed.

The apples cost me $20.

I also got my every-other-week produce box, which runs $35.

At the grocery store, I spent $103.20, and $77 of that was at Aldi.

I also had to stop at Target, and I spent $52 on groceries there ($13 of which was on Gold Medal unbleached flour, which is my favorite flour for when I want the white stuff.   And Target is about the cheapest place to buy it.)

So, I'm in at $210, which is slightly above my $200 average. But the last several weeks I've been a ways under $200, so I'm pretty, "Whatever." about this week.   😉

Oh, and I got a complimentary set of Mrs. Meyer's Iowa Pine products from ePantry this week so I could try 'em out before I offered the three free Mrs. Meyer's products to you all this week.

I haven't tried the other two scents, but oh my goodness, I lurve this Iowa Pine scent.   It has such an authentic sort of pine smell, unlike, say, Pine-Sol.   This smells like Christmas trees, whereas Pine-Sol just smells like...cleaning.

(I keep sniffing my hands after I wash them with this Mrs. Meyer's soap. 😉 )

Anyway, you can order the orange clove, or the cranberry, but if I were you, I'd get the Iowa Pine.  So good.

(The ePantry offer runs only through Sunday, just FYI.)

What We Ate

Monday

We had broccoli cheese noodle soup  and honey-glazed rolls (which I haven't made in quite some time, and I was freshly reminded how ridiculously good they are.   SERIOUSLY tasty.)

Tuesday

We had leftover chipotle chicken kebabs so I pulled the chicken into smaller pieces and made a salad with it.   I thinned out the dipping sauce with milk to make a dressing...easy peasy, and no waste.

That was the day I bought the two boxes of bruised apples, and I made most of them into applesauce that afternoon.   So of course we had applesauce with our salad.

Oh, and I made some oatmeal muffins too.

Wednesday

I made a shrimp, chicken, pepper, and green onion stir-fry, and I served it over rice.

We had applesauce with dinner again.   😉

Thursday

We had beef au jus sandwiches on homemade French bread.   And since my produce box gave me beans, we had  sauteed green beans with garlic and herbs.

Friday

I'm thinkin' I'm going to take the easy route and make pizza subs, which are pretty similar to pizza bagels.

  1. Haha I am glad it is not just us that are drowning in applesauce! I have a colleague who brings in bucketloads of them and I just can't waste them.

I didn't realise Aldi had made it across to the US - isn't it great?

    Thanks for posting 🙂

  2. Yes! I saw that Target had Gold Medal Unbleached flour ( which is my flour of choice, too) for $1.79/5 lb bag, so I stocked up as well! I've paid as much as $2.39 for it at regular grocery stores.

    1. $2.39 still isn't bad...at regular grocery stores here, it's usually over $3/bag and sometimes closer to $4. So I pretty much only ever buy it at Target!

  3. Love your menu, especially the idea of recycled leftovers in a different format. Could you please share your stir-fry sauce recipe? Happy weekend!

    1. I also would love to know what you put on stir fry. I've tried both store-bought and making my own, and never really enjoy it.

    2. This one is homemade teriyaki sauce (because I had no store-bought!) plus chicken broth with cornstarch mixed in. Next time I make it, I can take pictures and then post the recipe. I'd link to an online version, but I don't make the stir-fry like the recipe says to!

  4. I asked at the somewhat-nearby orchard whether they sold bruised/damaged fruit at a discount, but no, they press those for cider. Bummer for me, but value-added for them.

  5. Looks amazing! I miss apples. In my area of California, there just aren't that many apples. I mean, we can buy them, but they don't grow here very easily. I drown in citrus and avocado though.

I'm an apple snob, too. I'm a big pink lady fan, but I can tolerate Honeycrisp and Pinata apples.

    1. I'm jealous of your citrus. A few years ago, Mr. FG and I were in the Napa area and bought some fresh oranges from a roadside stand. Oh my soul, those were the best oranges I have EVER eaten. So good.

    2. Have you tried the Jazz Apples ? Fugi was my Fav but Now the Jazz Apple is :))
Tastes like Fuji But Really Really Crunchy Yummy ! I can't do a Crumbly Apple

  6. I LoVe these Posts !!!

I think this would be good Too. To make them like the Pic but cut in 1/2.& make MNIN Beef au jus sandwiches on French bread FOR appetizers !

    HAPPY HALLOWEEN to Y'all. !

  7. Do you ever can? By can I mean process or preserve. Of all the things I can applesauce is about the easiest. You'll save on freezer space!

    1. I was about to make the same comment! I canned applesauce for the first time this year. It was SO easy and my freezer is so happy 😉

      1. I haven't, mostly because I haven't thought to borrow my mom's pressure canner! I don't own a pot large enough to use for canning.

  8. We had a potluck at work on Thursday and I signed up to bring the rolls. I had made your honey glazed rolls once before for a family holiday and they were a hit, so I thought I would take them to the potluck. I didn't have time to make the rolls from scratch so I just used the frozen Rhodes brand rolls, let them rise the night before, then put together the glaze and baked them before work on Thursday. I got more compliments on those rolls than anything I have brought in ten years of working there! Thanks!
