Thankful Thursday | a negative test for Lisey

New here? Thankful Thursday is something we’ve been doing in these tough times; a (frugal and free) exercise to help us hunt for the good that is in our lives and in the world, even in the midst of a pandemic.

This week, I am thankful:

that Lisey’s Covid-19 test was negative

A co-worker got the virus, so Lisey went to get tested.

Happily, her test was negative, and it’s been a week and a half with she worked with him, which means she can go to work later this week.

that we found a non-dairy sour cream Sonia likes

I saw a tofu sour cream at the store, and we tried making onion dip with it (you know, the sort that involves a packet of soup mix).

Sonia has always loved that dip, so it has been a seriously sad thing for her not to be able to have it anymore.

But now, she can. Yay! I’m so happy about this.

that my (routine) mammogram was clear

And I am also thankful that I don’t have to do that again for another year!

Mammograms are not a thing I look forward to doing.

that we have had some lovely sunny winter days this week

It’s been pretty cold when I go for a walk in the morning (below freezing), but it’s been sunny.

sunny winter morning

And that has made all the difference!

In fact, I kind of like the chilly morning air, the crunchy ground, and the frost and ice.

winter-dock

I just don’t like winter darkness or the persistent cloudy days we often get in the winter.

As long as it’s sunny out, I’m very at-peace with the chilliness.

for hot showers

I was thinking this week about how hot showers are really a fairly modern luxury. I am extremely grateful I live in a time where hot showers are a thing.

for the feeling of laying down on a fresh pillow

You know that feeling when you first get into bed and your head sinks down into your pillow? So good.

In fact, sometimes I sit back up, fluff up the pillow, and lay back down again, just for the experience. And sometimes I do this several times.

NO THIS IS NOT WEIRD WHY DO YOU ASK.

for friends I can text with

Of course, I am seriously looking forward to a time when I can SEE my friends in person.

After the pandemic, I am totally going to see my Texas friend. 🙂

But in the meantime, I am thankful for the ability to text.

that Lisey has been having fun working on her car

She has a little Toyota Corolla, and she has, of her own initiative, been doing maintenance work on it, just for fun and to practice her automotive skills.

She really, truly enjoys doing this, which is impressive to me. I’m not the girliest girl in the world, but work involving stinky automotive fluids does not appeal to me.

Anyway, I’m thankful she’s found something she really enjoys doing that is also super practical.

that I’m going to take a class with Sonia

She needs a science credit, and I need multiple biology credits before I can apply to a nursing program, so she and I are going to do that together this semester, online.

I think this will be a fun challenge for me, being a student along with Sonia.

Hopefully I still remember how to learn things!

for how appreciative Zoe is

I was thinking this morning about how often Zoe says thank you when I do things for her, even things that are regular responsibilities for me (like helping her with her geometry).

Helping her with math isn’t exactly going above and beyond for me (I’m a homeschooling mom, after all!) but it’s nice that she says thank you anyway.

What are you thankful for today?

I love to hear about the kids, and particularly Lisey's work & interest in cars. Great news about the negative COVID test.

This week, I'm thankful for: -Getting weekly COVID tests mailed to me (via my employer), so we can reduce community spread as needed. So far, we've been negative -That my son has gotten totally into tennis, which is a much more COVID friendly activity than his former love - soccer. -That the weather was absolutely gorgeous today (72) & my husband & I went for a walk, & then had a drink by the pool. It felt like spring time -Virtual happy hours with my friends -A view at my desk (in our bedroom, because we're out of good places to work with four people working/schooling from home) that includes looking out over our backyard. We recently re-did the fence, and my view is lovely.

The Kite Hill french onion dip is quite good if you want to give it a try!

I looked into that before, and as far as I know all of their products involve nuts, which Sonia is allergic to.

I hear they are so tasty, though, so I am jealous of people who can eat them.

Kristen, you're doing Lisey a great service by supporting her choice of a non-traditional career for women and the pastimes that go along with it. Females in male-dominated fields often battle disbelief at their presence, skepticism related to their abilities and, sadly, outright discrimination based on their sex. Our daughter started off quitting softball at age 6 to play baseball because the boys wanted to play the game while most of the girls were more concerned about the color of their gloves. My husband and I supported her in that choice, and we supported her when she decided to become a barber - a job she loves. Discrimination ran rampant in the first two shops she worked at, but she's now working at a popular shop with four other barbers (all male) who appreciate her excellent skills and the female perspective she brings to the workplace. They consider her "one of the guys," and (much to her delight) included her from the start on their mountain biking and snowboarding adventures. I truly hope that Lisey has found acceptance and admiration at her workplace. Her confidence in her career choice will carry over to many other facets of her life. Good for her - and for you and your husband for supporting her! We can both be thankful that our daughters are thriving on such non-traditional paths - and, just maybe, leading the way for others.

Oh yes, Lisey hopes to inspire other girl to do this, if that's what they're interested in.

Lisey has faced some inter-personal challenges for sure, but usually once her bosses and co-workers see how hard she works and how competent she is, they relax and start to trust her.

She gets the most support from female customers, actually! They often tell her how great it is to see a woman working there, and that always makes Lisey happy.

Good for your daughter for pursuing a career she loves, even if it's more off the beaten path for women!

Zoey sounds wonderful. I'm thankful that my adult children like me enough to Facetime me on a pretty regular basis, and send me videos of their children. I'm thankful that I am healthy. I'm thankful that I have a job where I feel appreciated. I'm thankful that (most days) I get along with my husband. I'm thankful for the oranges I've been buying, they seem so sweet this year and feel like a treat in the middle of the day.

My husband and I every afternoon stop grind some coffee beans to have a cup of coffee and eat a couple of oranges or celemtines. I too thought they have been very sweet the last year.

I love the combination of tastes of coffee and oranges. You know they even have dark chocolate with orange in it.
