Grocery Shopping/Menu Plan | Two letters

Dear Child,

Just so you know, when I ask everyone to go to the bathroom before we leave for grocery shopping, that does indeed include you.

Love,

Mommy

Dear Aldi,

Next time a child excludes herself from the pre-shopping bathroom trip routine, could you please make sure the ladies bathroom is not out of order?

Thank you.

After a week off, we headed back to Aldi and Weis for our grocery shopping. Aside from the bathroom fiasco, nothing went terribly wrong. But, I was reminded again that grocery shopping with 4 children is not exactly my most favorite activity in the whole world. 😉

Aldi groceries.

I spent $74.31 at Aldi and $27.32 at Weis (which included a purchase of a pound of local sausage).

I got all of this produce from my parents’ garden when we went swimming this week (they’re on vacation, so the garden produce is up for grabs. Yay!).

Summer produce on a countertop.

Since I had some extra grocery money from not shopping last week, I also did some other local food shopping…at the produce stand, I got watermelon, beans, peaches, and corn. I also stopped at the local organic store, where I bought wild tilapia, local chicken, bulk cardamom, and a bunch of cilantro. While I was there, I learned that I can actually bring my own containers for the chicken, fish, and spices, which is totally awesome. I’m definitely going to do that next time.

Local produce on an oak surface.

I spent $12.81 at the organic market and $11 at the produce stand.

All told, my grocery spending for the week was $125.44. I had $65 extra going into this week, so I still have about $40 of extra grocery money left over. Sweet.

Saturday

Sunday

  • We’re having several families from church over to our house, so we’re grilling out and everyone’s bringing some side dishes. I’m going to make Chocolate Parfait bars and maybe something else too if I have the time.

Monday

  • Mr. FG will be out with his dad at a baseball game, so it’ll just be me and the kids. Soo, we’ll probably have a clean-out-the-fridge kind of night.

Tuesday

Wednesday

  • Tacos
  • fruit salad
  • green beans

Thursday

  • Aussie Chicken
  • Two-Tone bread (this got bumped last week, but I hope to get it made this week so I can take photos and share it with you in a Wednesday baking post)
  • green salad

Friday

  • Home date night with Mr. FG…the kids will eat something super easy, and I think we might get a meal from Quiznos is the $3 meal deal is still going on.

Sounds like fine time to commandeer the men's bathroom. Or the manager's.

I like the way you think.

(Mills College grads like me have no compunctions at all about taking over the men's room.)

What's in the ziploc baggy on top of the corn in the last photo? Just curious. ;-)

That's the cardamom...they sell it in bulk, and next time I'm going to bring my own glass spice jar so I don't have to use a plastic bag.

It's great that you have been able to include organic foods in the grocery budget!! That is so inspirational!

I went $35 over my grocery budget for this two week period. I ran out of a lot of expensive ingredients, like almonds. Also, my daughter Bella turned 9 on the 17th, and her birthday cake turned out to be WAY more expensive than I was anticipating. It was the frosting ingredients that did it! I had to buy a pound of mascaparone cheese, which turned out to be $10 a pound! It turned out really good, though. I wouldn't let anyone touch it until I had snapped several photos for posterity.:P This week we're eating a lot of mangoes, because I bought like 20 of them on sale.

I know your family doesen't eat a lot of meat but how did u only spend $12 for organic veggies and meat??? I recently went to an organic farm where they sell meat and I walked out with nothing! I wanted chicken but for just a few pieces it was $16 dollars! I live in Canada and yes it is just a tad more for things here but that was just ridiculous :(
