52 New Recipes, Week 12 | Shitake Steak Stir Fry (except not Shitake)
Guys, I'm sorry to say this, but I didn't take a picture of our meal! Gah!
Whoops.

But I did make it, and it was quite successful. Whee!
It uses pretty much a whole head of Chinese cabbage, so if my produce box sends me one of those, I am ready. <flexes bicep>
Bring it on!
On your advice, I did not use Shitakes and opted for white button mushrooms instead. Because we are not intense mushroom people. 😉
And the great thing is that with the oyster sauce and ginger, even the mushroom-haters among us thought that they were pretty tolerable.
I think next time I'd stir-fry the cabbage just a little less so that it has a bit of crunch to it. But other than that, I'd keep the recipe the same.
So, yay!
(This recipe is from the December/January 2016/2017 issue of Cook's Country).
Next Week's Recipe
As you may remember if you follow me on Instagram, my grandpa died back in December.

But for a variety of reasons, we haven't had his memorial service yet. It's actually going to be this coming week, so I'm going to be flying out to South Dakota.
That little town in South Dakota was one of my favorite places in the whole world, and I used to love, love, love to go visit my grandparents and cousins there when I was a kid. I haven't been there since I was 17, and I wanted to go back and say goodbye to that special place one more time.
And it will be good to see all the relatives on my dad's side of the family too.
I won't be gone the whole week, but it'll be enough that I'm thinking maybe it's not the week to try a new recipe. There'll be time for that later.
Your turn!
What new recipe did you try this week?

I am sorry to hear about your grandpa. I lived in a tiny town in North Dakota for 5 years several years ago. The people there hold a special place in my heart and we still keep in touch. Something about those mid west people, they just come from good stock I think. Hoping you find what you are looking for there, and wishing you peace and comfort .
Right? And if anyone else looked at that little town, they'd be like, "Um, ok. What is so special about it??"
But to my childhood self, it was the most magical place in the world.
Also sorry to hear about your grandpa (not on instagram here). Love the picture of the three of you, he looked like a kind and gentle soul. Guessing he was the grandpa you were trying to write to monthly. Enjoy your time reconnecting with grown cousins, aunts, uncles, etc. Good stories shared will bring many laughs. Tears have their place, too. Praying for comfort for the whole family, and peace.
Yes, that was the grandpa I wrote to! I'm so glad I sent him letters and pictures.
I'm sure I will cry (so many feelings about this...happy memories, and sadness over change, and missing the people who are gone from that place.) But I also am pretty sure that I would regret not taking the opportunity to go, and I'm so glad I get to see my relatives that I rarely see.
Sorry to hear about your Grandpa, loss is difficult regardless of age.
No new recipe here this week either.
We had an adoption this morning, our two grandsons 9 and 5 1/2 (we had already adopted our granddaughter in July of 2015, she is now 27 months) so a busy week!
Have a great week everyone!!
Safe travels Kristen!
Oh, what a wonderful thing you are doing for your grandchildren. So much love and kudos to you.
Sorry to hear about your grandpa Kristen. My grandpa died in December as well and we just had his memorial in Southern California last weekend. Great memories there for me growing up, etc. I hope your time is sweet. Glad you get to go!
No new recipes here... hopefully I can find something everything will like as we need a breath of fresh air to our dinners!
Aww, I'm sorry to hear about YOUR grandpa. Always hard!
I'm so sorry to hear about your grandpa; I was thinking about your writing him the other day, as I went through a box of old letters from my grandparents. They've been gone many years now but those letters were special (both ways; they had saved mine too)! And no one would know the small town where we wen to visit them either, but that was a magical place. Prayers for a good visit for you.
I think it's wonderful that you are going back for the service. It will be a sad but sweet time. These days, funerals are the only time I get to see some of my far-flung family, sad to say. Go, definitely! You are making a good choice.
I'm sorry about your grandpa. I hope you have a safe trip and get to have some good catching-up time with your relatives.
Sorry to hear about your grandpa. Enjoy your visit back to the service.
I made chicken greek bowls. A little time consuming but i was able to prep in the morning and just had to make the brown rice and grill the marinated chicken before dinner
My condolences for your loss - I know his memory will be a blessing. As will the letters. I bet you're glad you took the time to write them.
No new recipies this week. My schedule has freed up so I have several lined up for next week, including interesting ones from the Mar/Apr CI: Steak & Mushroom Pie[1], Alvolemono (sp) Soup (Greek egg-lemon soup w chix), hash browns, Cottage Pie[2] insides, maybe the thoroughly indulgent Cheesy Beer Bread. Several of these will go in the freezer for later.
[1] What *is* it with CI and the so-called boneless short ribs? Either it's a weird name for another cut or it's a highly localized specialty.
[2] Which CI incorrectly calls Shepherd's Pie. Shepherd's Pie is made with lamb, Cottage Pie with beef.
I'm very sorry to hear about your grandpa. It sounds like the trip to South Dakota will be much-needed, though! I feel the same way when I visit my family up in Oklahoma. 🙂 And that stir fry looks quite tasty! We tried a few new recipes ourselves this week and they were big hits! A favorite was ropa vieja, which we served over rice. Yummm.
I hope someday to provide a magical place for my grandkids - I think my kids would say that our new property in the country is rather magical to them altho they are pretty grown! Sorry to hear about your Grandpa. However, I always marvel at folks who have their grandparents into adulthood. I think that's so lucky! This week the "new" recipe I am trying is a knock off on the Buttermilk Chicken Salad at Jack Allen's kitchen. Romaine, granny smith apple, buttermilk chicken strips, walnuts, and shaved parmesan. I will probably serve it with Ranch dressing and a chilled chardonnay! Happy Weekend!
Yeah, I'm especially fortunate that way because my parents are the oldest in their families. So, my siblings and I were some of the first grandchildren, and we came along when my grandparents weren't that old.
Plus, my grandpa was very long lived. He was 99 when he passed in December and would have been 100 this month!
I feel that way about where I grew up, it's something my siblings and I share that no one will ever really understand. When we are all gathered at my dad's farm, we act like kids again and our significant others just shake their heads 🙂 Enjoy your trip and the memories!
So sorry to hear about your Granpa. It's hard saying good-bye to those special places, but you will always have your memories. My parents had a house on Lake Gaston the we had to sell after they both died. My sons and I went back for one last look and it was so hard. It still makes me cry. Good luck.
I'm so sorry for your loss. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
I am sorry to hear about your grandpa. I lived in SD. almost my entire life and just moved to Illinois 2 1/2 years ago. I lived in the small town of Roscoe, SD. I would be interested to know what little town in SD. that you are referring to.
Ah, so you were farther north! My grandparents lived in Marion, SD, which is closer to Sioux Falls.
I'm sorry about your grandpa. I love Shiitake mushrooms. The depth of flavor is amazing.
