Thankful Thursday | RN, week one!

This week, I am thankful:

for some days of beautiful summer weather

We had a little period of weather that felt a bit like the Seattle summer weather I sampled back in July!

sunrise.

So I became much less indoorsy during that period of time. 😉

I caught morning sun.

blue skies over water.

And sunsets.

I saw a small deer:

And I always have to stop and notice flowers. 🙂

orange flowers.

that nursing orientation started this week

GUYS. My badge says RN now!!

Kristen with classmate.
My classmate Kristen and I are both in orientation together

We're doing a mix of online and in person this week.

This is the kind of thing I wear in-person:

Kristen in scrubs

But for at-home on-camera stuff, I only wear a scrub top, because shorts are less hot!

Kristen in shorts and a scrub top.

No one cares what my legs look like when class is here:

Chiquita appreciates the online days. 😉

cat on lap.

that I live so close to my hospital

I have to drive there a LOT of days over the next three weeks, so I am grateful for a short commute. Even with rush hour traffic, it is not terrible!

for a cat-filled grief illustration

One of our sessions was on end of life care, so of course we covered the Kubler-Ross stages (which are not exactly stages).

But this time, they were illustrated with cats. 😉

for the solace in a raise

My fellow new nurses and I are getting a little tired of sitting in orientation trainings/lectures (we'd rather be out there on the floor!), but we are comforting ourselves with the knowledge that at least we are getting nurse pay for this.

And that is way better than sitting in a college class that you have to pay for. 😉

that I almost never work 8:00-4:30

A lot of our training days run on this schedule and honestly, I dislike it! An 8:00 am start makes it a little hard to get a workout in first, and traffic going home is bad at 4:30.

I'm glad my normal schedule will give me three longggg days on (no traffic, ever!) and then four days off (easy to work out on those days!)

What are you thankful for this week?

  1. OK, lets try this again. Blog went away while typing & I had to reload.

You are working 3 days in a row or 3 days (not in a row) during week? My (second( cousin is RN in Florida for about a year now & she has never worked 3 consecutive days in a row unless called in. I thought there were laws/rules about working 12+ hour shifts more than 2 days because of possible sleeplessness.

Thankful I git teen new laptop yesterday (will post great deal on frugal things next week). We also stopped by college to adjust teen schedule (in person class--only person registered--to online class). Luckily checked in as found out teen needs to resend photi/copy of high school diploma to show graduation for state scholarship for tuition.
Thankful teen side gig is still doing ok and that teen able to pick up more shifts at part time job.
Thankful for rescue dogs! They are always so happy to see us. And (mostly) ready to go for walks, even in the heat (which we limit time).
Thankful for being able to turn of AC at night, but still keep tower fans on circulating the air.
Thankful that check engine light came on yesterday morning & went to Auto Zone to get it checked. It was minor code for small evap leak (gas cap but I have capless). I was told to push it down quickly few times & should reseal unless someone put hose in gas tank to (try) to siphon gas out of tank. Looking to see if I can get locking gas door.
Thankful for the time being able to spend with my dad & (unofficial) step mom. They are amazed at how much teen eats. Teen & my dad are 2 peas in a pod. 🙂
Thankful that my cell phone dried out (*shake out water & put in front of fan) after getting caught in downpour of rain Tuesday. I love the little rain drop symbol that notices condensation in USB port.
Thankful for my Aunt being my caring/loving support always, but especially when I need it. She has been such an influence in my & teens life that I could never repay or ask for anything better.

Thankful for Kristen & her blog where we call learn & share with each other.

    Have a great weekend. <3

    1. @Regina,
Either my typing is off today or auto correct is not working. 🙁 Apologies for the misspellings.

  2. Read yesterday's post with interest. Very many practical suggestions, and also encouragement.
We are so wired to act and try to make a difference, that it is an ache to be helpless. Even in situations that are beyond our control, we seek areas that we can influence for the better.

    Not thankful, but thankful:
Cautiously being in touch again with my sibling who has been suffering from psychiatric disease for several decades, leading to several periods of estrangement. Hopefully being able to offer some emotional support in a traumatic situation, that I cannot remedy nor lessen in any way.

Thankful that I am able to be open to what is good and beautiful, in spite of helplessness.

    1. @JNL,
Bless your (and your sibling's) heart. What a difficult situation. I hope things work out well for you both. Sending you hugs and a prayer.

    2. @JNL, I wish I could send a big dose of strength and grace for you to use, as I know those are the traits one leans on most in situations like what you have with your sibling. I, too, have a family member who is like a sibling to me and has suffered from psychosis for several years, now. It is often a thankless role to play from a one-on-one standpoint, but caregivers (and, even if there are no caregivers, the people this person interacts with) do benefit from our lending support. Thank you for any support you do offer this person.

  3. Third week in a row - this is becoming a habit 😀

Just remember that three weeks of orientation will fly by and you will soon be on the ward.

This week I am thankful for
my husband - Sunday marked 15 years since we met and I am forever thankful that I did go to the speed-dating event despite really not feeling like it. I only went because I had agreed to go with a friend and didn't want to let her down - found out a couple of years ago she only went because she didn't want to let me down!!

a friend who gave honest advice on how to tackle my rickety shed. Thankfully it wasn't too expensive to implement his recommendations so I will be working on it on Sunday

once again, a reliable car as I am travelling a lot this week (over 500 miles) and knowing I will not have to worry about if it will start is reassuring

my allotment - the other plot holders are so friendly and welcoming. They always pass the time of day if we bump into each other and are happy to give advice if asked

  4. First, I'm thankful to Shelagh for asking the question that led to yesterday's guest post. (And, again, I wish her and her DH as gentle a passage through their difficult time as possible.) I'm also thankful to Kristen for running the post, and to all the commenters, especially those who raised points I hadn't covered.

I'm also thankful (as I so often am) to the Bestest Neighbors, who were my drivers yesterday for a minor eye procedure (getting my post-cataract lenses laser-buzzed to remove fuzziness). Painless, no anesthesia required, and I probably could have driven myself if the eye clinic hadn’t insisted on my having drivers. And the BNs got to enjoy breakfast at a nearby favorite diner.)

And I'm thankful (as I also so often am) for JASNA BFF, who arrives this afternoon for the annual Triple Birthday Celebration visit (a proud tradition now in its 14th year). Our JASNA Panera friend, the third Lady of August, will come over from her city for the actual TBC on Saturday. We’ll have lunch out (Thai and Indian are the leading contenders at present) and then come back here for large gooey cupcakes (which BFF and I will obtain from Wegmans), prezzies, and JASNA and other gossip–all under the coolth of my central AC. (No relief from the current heat wave is predicted for Saturday.)

  5. This week I'm thankful:
    * for a nice, cool morning today so I could take my dog on a long walk. I'm also thankful that (even though I don't have the sidewalks I used to have) most of my walk is on a dirt road and I don't have to worry about traffic except for the beginning and end of the walk.
    * for friends helping us move the rest of the big furniture over from our old house.
    * for the amazing amount of progress that has been happening on our addition for my in-laws... and that the construction doesn't really affect me at all other than parking. We are 3/3 for contractors having other jobs get cancelled or delayed to make them have space for us at just the right time to move things along quickly. It's been incredible.
    * that my kitchen is peaceful. We currently have two households worth of furniture in our house and a lot to unpack (especially in the basement) so there is lots that still feels unsettled, but at least my kitchen is orderly and spacious.
    * that I still have another week and a half until school starts. My To Do List is still so long, but I'm knocking things off little by little.

    1. @Ruth T, glad to hear move went smoothly & that all contractors getting things done faster than expected. Don't stress too much on the unpacking all at once (basement), especially since you have 2 households of stuff.
I wish the Governor would change back school start date to after Labor Day. The few days of school at end of month then long weekend would be better served enjoying last days of summer. Hoping your school year goes well.

    2. @Regina, Thanks for the encouragement and well wishes! I have mixed feelings about the start date. Starting a week before Labor Day means that my kids go for 4 days, have 4 days off, then have another 4 day week, which makes the transition to school a little smoother and less intense. But as a parent it makes all of August feel like school is banging on the door.

I had a friend over this morning to see the new house and after the big tour, she helped me get stuff done. So nice! Another item for my thankful list. 😉

  6. I'm thankful for:
    1. We've been really busy with a job that's turned out to be bigger than anticipated, but I reminded myself I'd rather be busy with a job than sitting around with no work (and therefore no pay). The job site is also very close to our house, and we find out there was a cancelation so we have a little longer to finish it.
2, I've continued to make ebay sales.
    3. For a great homeschool group. We're going to a museum with them today.
    4. For blogs, like yours that I enjoy reading

    1. @Katy @ Practical Walk,
The NPR news for our state said home/virtual schooling has increased more than 1,000% here in Texas. I think the segment was on Texas Tribune or KERA Dallas yesterday. It's also big in Florida, Pennsylvania (?), and a couple of other states. So you're part of a growing trend!

  7. --800 miles of driving, no problems. Big thankful. Especially with my new driver taking some of the driving in the city time for the experience. Much more white knuckling than typical for me in the passenger seat. 🙂

All the rest will be things I'm thankful for at home . . .

--My husband managed the younger three children at home plus having to be at the school in-service training for two days on his own. Grateful for a true helpmate.

--My friend who is a teacher had her three kids--also friends of my children--with her at school on the in-service day my husband had to drive several hours to pick up the school bus. My children would have had to drive with him if not for my friend saying they could just hang out with her kids and she'd keep an eye on them.

--My decision to not work at the school this year meant that I was available this week for this last-minute trip for medical appointments. Things like this are one of the main reasons I quit work. If we hadn't been able to go this week, we would have had to wait another several months.

--My own coffee. I drink very strong coffee with chicory, and I put heavy cream in it. Those are not things to be found in hotels, etc. typically, so I suffer with weak coffee and milk or, worse, non-dairy creamer, until I get home again.

--My own pillow and bedding. Lumpy, firm pillows that fight back and polyester bedding are my bane when traveling.

--Quiet. It seems the whole world hums with background noise now, with music, or traffic, or even HVAC systems constantly running. At my house, the only hum is the occasional and quiet refrigerator.

    1. @kristin @ going country, there was a power-line short and small grass fire near our house the other day and I was so struck by how quiet the house was with no HVAC or fridge or washing machine. (Also was struck by stillness and stifling humidity within minutes so we went to the pool. Simple pleasures.)

    2. @JD, I did find myself pushing on the floor with my foot a few times. 🙂 But mostly just clutching the door.

    3. @kristin @ going country, I hear you on the noise! Even gas stations now have teevees that play while the gas is pumping. WHY??

    4. @kristin @ going country, I used to think the breathing techniques I learned for childbirth came in handy when they were learning to drive.

  8. My kids went back to school this week, 5th and 10th grades! They both had a great first day back. It made me so happy to hear them excitedly talk about their days.

Allergy shots are amazing. Last August, I was completely miserable with waves of sneezing and itchiness that would not go away no matter what I did. I’m not sure why August is the peak month for me, but the itchy eyes have returned at a much lesser intensity.

AC! It’s been high 80s and will be in the 90s starting tomorrow. No, thank you! Yesterday, one of our weathermen did a poll asking people if they’d prefer 100F or snow. I without a doubt would take snow over high heat!

    1. @JenRR,
I wish I knew why August is my hell month. I wake up looking like I was punched and so so itchy.

    2. @ms.b214@gmail.com, That sounds miserable! I hope whatever you are reacting to passes soon.

I am very allergic to dust mites and I’ve heard they love this heat. Last year they were so terrible I was having reactions to cardboard boxes and couldn’t go into my basement without having a reaction.

    3. @JenRR, for me August is bad allergies because everything so hot & dried out/dying. I'm allergic to everything outside but sunshine & still go out most days. This week is routinely year after year worst allergies for me. It last about 2 weeks then eases some before getting bad again in October when leaves dropping like rain.
Some people swear by Netti Pots but I can't do those, so sinus/allergy meds 3 times a day.
Good luck. I hope you don't suffer too much.

I am no ready for the white stuff (snow) so I'll take the heat.

    4. @Regina, have you tried Arm & Hammer saline spray? It's just a little saline to moisten rather than a huge amount in the netti pot. It helps me every morning.

  9. So excited for you as you take this step! I've had the privilege of learning so much from the nurses I've worked with.

My heart is heavy these days as we approach the Jewish new year. We had hoped so much to have a baby, and have instead lost two pregnancies and it's been so hard on my body and spirit. Still, gratitude helps.

    1. My daughter, always, for just being her sweet little almost 4 year-old self.

    2. Mr. B, for believing me when I said that redecorating would help cheer me up, and has been moving furniture and painting the living room and helping me reorganize without complaint. Focusing on frivolous things is good for my busy mind 🙂

    3. A functioning if imperfect public transit system that air conditioning (phew.)

    4. Having a more generous budget than we used to. It makes everything easier.

    5. My colleagues. It's a fun, supportive group. I'm not super close friends with anyone, but it's so nice to have work friends that I look forward to seeing.

    1. @Meira@meirathebear,

very sorry that you have lost 2 pregnancies, that must be extremely hard and frustrating too. Yes, of course you have your lovely daughter and that is all great, but... but...

Redecorating does definitely lift the mood a little though, I must agree!

May the new year ahead bring you what you truly want and may it all work out perfectly in the end.

    2. @Meira@meirathebear,
I am so sorry to hear of your miscarriages. May this next year be the year all your dreams come true!

PS--My mom tried for years and could never get pregnant. So she and Daddy adopted and we all lived happily ever after. (Just sayin'.....)

    3. @Meira@meirathebear, my heart goes out to you. I struggled with infertility before eventually having my kids by IVF and remember how devastating each month felt. I'm glad you are finding some joy where you can.

    4. @Meira@meirathebear, I join the others in sending sympathy for your losses, and in wishing that the coming New Year will be a sweeter one in every way.

    5. @Meira@meirathebear,
So sorry for your losses. Praying that God helps your family to heal. Please take care of yourself, it's a pain that eases as time goes on. Much love to you.

    6. @Meira@meirathebear,
Adding my condolences for your two miscarriages. My mom (now 91 years old) had 2 miscarriages, but ended up with four daughters. 🙂 Back then, it wasn't talked about or acknowledged, and I wonder if she ever truly grieved those losses. She always mentioned it very matter-of-factly if at all.
Anyway, I, too, am hoping this coming year will be the sweetest yet for you.

    7. @Meira@meirathebear, I’m so sorry! May this upcoming year be kinder to you and your family. Blessings!

  10. Today I'm thankful

That I remembered to send in DS#4's homeschool notification before August got away with me...we just got his exemption letter in the mail a couple of days ago, before school starts here! I used to be really on top of notifications, especially when we had to do end of the year assessments, but this year, if I hadn't been checking on the school start dates, I would have forgotten for sure.

    For a homeschool-friendly state.

For DH's continued healing. He had long Covid, then battled (and is still battling) osteomyelitis, but he's gone from needing to nap every day and being unable to really exercise, to biking 20 miles roundtrip to work, several times a week. God is so good.

For kids who are willing to and like to cook.

For Clark, whose antics make everybody laugh. He's such a good family cat. Not a cuddler, not a lap cat, but he loves being around his people. Lately he's been tricking DH into having to go out to the garage to physically carry him back into the house when we want to go to bed (he has a litter box out there, but also one inside, and his food and water are inside). DH thinks Clark wants to relive that special moment in the shelter when DH had to pick him up and bring him back into the room, and said to me on the way, "I think he's our cat now." 😀 Like I said, not a cuddler, but a sentimental sort of cat.

    1. @Karen A.,
      I love happy cat stories.
I have 2,a tux and a mini panther and they give me a few laughs everyday and sometimes an excuse to use bad words,LOL

    2. @Patricia, Oh, he gives us some excuses. We have learned that if he does not get the chance to "play hide and seek" in the garage, or if DH is out of town more than one night, I am apt to wake up to an unpleasant surprise in the bed, courtesy of Clark's suddenly sensitive stomach. He wants what he wants!

  11. I'm so glad I did an upper body weights workout for the first time since getting pregnant! My goal for August was to get at least one non-walking workout in a week, to ease back to my regular routine. The strength training workout was intimidating but I liked getting it done! Grateful to have energy back.

I'm very grateful to have my book club girls in my life, and two of them introduced me to Scottish County Dancing, so I get to see them weekly instead of monthly now.

Always grateful for the husband and everything he does for me (around the house, emotional support, laughing over nothing), he's a good one.

  12. Love the feline grief stages photos!

    I’m thankful for:
A new skill, pruning. I started in May on the first of the 24 bushes along the fence facing the road but life and extreme heat and humidity got in the way. Today I will prune the last overgrown monster and it shouldn’t take two hours like the first one.
Phone calls. Messaging is convenient but the human voice conveys so much more than the typed word. I’ve enjoyed three phone conversations with friends who feed my soul this week.
A new friend. Child rearing and working put me in contact with lots of women who were easy to be friends with because of so much in common. However it’s a bigger challenge as an older retired person, especially a homebody like me.
Robo vacuum cleaner. Call me lazy, but I love sipping tea and commenting on my favorite blog while the floors magically get clean.

  13. Friends. We have so many great people in our lives and I'm so grateful.
Our 'new' nieces. Last year we discovered long-lost twin nieces through a DNA test (my husband's estranged brother's kids.) They have really embraced us and even though they live in another state, they stay in touch. Yesterday we got back-to-school pics of their kids.
That my best friend is feeling better.
For the beautiful sunrise this morning.

  14. The Kubler-Ross cats made my day! They really should have had Chiquita do the entire thing, though.

    My thanksgivings:
    1. This gets a bit involved, sorry. My usually confident 11-year-old granddaughter was apprehensive about riding the bus for the first time. Her father went with her to the bus stop for her first day of riding, and of course, the school's bus map was wrong - no bus stopped there. He got her to school and my daughter got the correct stop and had my GD called to the school's office phone to tell her the new stop. However, in the noise of first day of school and a poor phone connection, the GD misheard her correct stop and got off the bus alone in totally the wrong place in her neighborhood, a section she was totally unfamiliar with. Her dad had been at the correct stop several streets away and now had no idea where his daughter was. A woman pulled her car up by my GD, asked if she needed help and showed her teacher's ID through her open car window. GD didn't approach the car but said yes and gave the teacher my son-in-law's phone number. The teacher called him and rolled her car slowly down the street in the direction that my son-in-law would be coming, keeping abreast of my GD who walked on the sidewalk. My very relieved son-in-law got there quickly and all ended well. I'm very thankful for that kind teacher.

    2. Also school related, in spite of the bus issue, all four kids had good days at school itself on their first day.

    3. It's been weird, but we've had almost no mosquitoes for a few months now. I know hurricanes can disrupt their reproduction schedules so perhaps that's why, but - wow. It's been nice not to have them, for however long this lasts.

    4. My Darn Tough socks sprouted a hole, but they honored the guarantee. I have another pair coming to me. I had to pay to ship mine back, but they pay to ship the new pair. This is a frugality, too, I suppose.

    5. I have six and a half months till retirement!!!!

    1. @JD, that's an impressive bit of work on your SIL's, GD's, and the teacher's parts. All getting the job done while behaving safely. Your GD will be that much more confident now.

  15. I'm thankful for...
*a fun first book club meeting
    * a very kind neighbor who tried to jump my car and then loaned us hers to get my daughter to school on time when it became clear the battery was dead
*my daughter is having a good week back at school and in a class with several friends
*we got to attend one of my best friend's weddings in my hometown last weekend

  16. Orientation will go fast. Pretty soon you will be in a schedule and will enjoy it. Hopefully that schedule won't be too strenuous.

I am thankful that I made it to the gym 4 times this week. I am extremely close to reaching a 25 lb weight loss mark. And I am feeling good about my increased upper body strength.

I am thankful that I am going on a girl's weekend to do some scrapbooking. So looking forward to it. Best part is I don't have to drive! I'm usually very tired by the end and it takes me longer to get home than to get there. But there will be a lot of fun and lots of laughing and getting scrapbooking done.

Wishing all the parents a "good back to school" time. I sort of miss it, but I don't. But I know a lot of parents who will enjoy their quiet time.

  17. 1. Rain in August that has kept temperatures in the 80's for weeks. High humidity yes but an August with highs in the 80's in Georgia? Unheard of. I will take it.
    2. White peaches and white nectarines are my summer favorites and they have been SO good this year!
    3. Our church. I look forward to the rhythm of Sundays spent with my family in a Sunday service worshipping & having fellowship with friends and neighbors. A slow day with a crockpot dinner and simple joys finish the week in the best way.
    4. Joy upon joy knowing our tiniest new family member is growing and progressing just the way she should and Mama is healthy too!
    5. 4th grade for my son. He loves his teacher and is thriving. This is no small feat and I am so grateful for all the progress he has made over the last year.

  18. This week I am thankful…
    • For a moment that made me stop in my tracks. I walked out onto my back patio on Sunday to see my husband making pizza in our pizza oven, my son playing fetch with our puppy, and our old dog sunning himself while dozing. My heart was so full at that exact moment that I felt like I was walking on air for the rest of the evening.
    • My son made the sophomore team as an incoming freshman! He really put his best effort in at tryouts and it showed. This accomplishment has made him very excited to start the school year.
    • For the contentment I get from a crochet project. The repetition is soothing and the brain power needed is low so it’s a nice way to spend some time in the evening.
    • For a couple of upcoming trips this fall. One is for work and the other is for pleasure but both will be fun.

  19. You look great in your blue scrubs, Nurse Kristen!!! Congrats! Hope everything is going fantastically well for you!
    1. For the first day of school today. I have a 1/2 day subbie job already, starting at noon.
    2. For the rain last night. Didn't have to go out and put on/move the sprinklers. Thank you, God, for blessing us with rain.
    3. For the rain-cooled temperatures. In the 70s instead of 100s. A welcome relief from the heat.
    4. For my new metal roof. Everyone told me that when it rained, it'd be so noisy, it'd be bad. I hardly heard the rain. In fact, I was greatly surprised when I went to the window and saw it was raining. Because I didn't hear a thing indoors. It has some kind of foam insulation that dampens the sound....no pun intended.
    5. Mr. Snuggy Dog.

    1. @Fru-gal Lisa,
did you have extra padding or insulation added under metal roof? I've been told same thing about noise for metal roofs but wondered if there are ways known to make quieter. Looking ahead in preparation for new roof in few years.

  20. That my father had a fantastic trip to Japan with two of his grandchildren. For the kids it was a trip of a lifetime which, given my family's travel habits, takes some doing.

That my 88 year old dad can still take such trips. He's not even a wreck at the end.

That my father has such a huge cognitive reserve (thanks A Marie for the phrase) that he'll probably never get senile.

That a lot of relatives and I could together get my father the Life Book experience, in which an amazing team helps someone write his autobiography. The subject is interviewed over the course of 6 months, a team helps edit and proof read the text, someone helps go thru photos, and you get physical books, digital books, a shortened interview w the subject, and a couple of other bells and whistles.

It ended up being multiple gifts in one because dad enjoyed the process, he gets the result to hand out, his kids, grandkids, niblings, and future generations get to enjoy the results. Utter happy dance for the success of my idea.

That my rising college senior nibling got a post-graduation job offer from her summer employer. And that she called me to tell me about it and we talked for an hour.

  21. I am so excited for you to get out on the floor taking care of patients.
Our mini 4 day heat wave is officially over. Today will be 25 degrees cooler.
I had a scary trespassor yesterday and he was hard to get rid of, when I finally got him onto the county road a construction guy who is a friend of a friend helped me keep that guy from continuing on and harassing other neighbors. The guy was on foot and we all have 1/2 mile or longer driveways. The sheriff was very helpful. I didn't sleep a wink last night.
Because I couldn't sleep, I sat outside and watched the Perseid meteor shower.
Will plant the fall/winter garden starts today.

  22. Congratulations on your first week of RN work!

    My thankfuls:
-cool weather. It was unbelievable humid last weekend with higher than normal tempertures, but this week has been glorious and much less humid. Good for being outside and not needing fans on in inside. I got to watch the clouds pass by one morning while I drank my coffee outside, and it was glorious.
-a week of calm before the chaos of the school year starts.
-video chatting with my niece and nephews. They are the cutest, and I haven't seen them in a while.
-my dog. He's old. And I'm concerned that his days with us are coming to an end, so I'm soaking up all his delight and comfort while I still get to have him.

  23. I'm feeling a bit grumpy so hopefully this will help!

    1. I'm thankful for a nearby beach. After work yesterday I went to the beach and had fun jumping off the swimming platforms.

    2. I'm thankful for coffee in the park with a friend.

    3. I'm thankful for excellent public transport. Of course, there are occasional delays like earlier, but overall it's very reliable!

    4. I'm thankful that I was able to help a couple buy a bus ticket on their phone earlier when they didn't know how to.

    5. I'm thankful for a compliment a friend gave me!

  24. I'm thankful for a new ceiling fan in our living room. The old one died about 2 weeks ago and it took us a bit to get a new fan and light kit we wanted and straighten out some questionable straighten out some questionable wiring. But now my favorite breeze is back! I guess I didn't know how spoiled I'd gotten having this fan. We added it to this room about 5 years ago.

For hints of fall. The temps have cooled slightly and now 90 degrees seems comfortable. I'm looking forward to sweater weather.

For my hubby. He can be a pain in the neck sometimes, (can't they all, and I can be, too) but he always tries to do everything we need to get done. We are both retired and over the last few years I've told him, it's okay to hire someone to do this or that and not feel guilty. We can afford it and he saves us so much $$ doing a lot of things.

For knowing how to sew as d having a sewing machine. I've been going curtain crazy the past few weeks. I love the creativity of sewing and knowing that I will have something unique that I created. It feeds my soul.

  25. This week, I am thankful for
Air conditioning that is quiet and efficient. The temps have been in the 90’s, unusual for Maine, but it’s the dog days of summer after all.
That my new appliances are so quiet.
The garden is producing loads of fresh veggies! Yummm.
That SW is having a 40% off paint sale right when we needed it.
That we no longer have to pay college tuition! When we had two in college at the same time and a third child in High school, those were some tough years. Glad it’s behind us, and they are all gainfully employed in their chosen careers. Now that we can, we regularly contribute to the grandchildren’s education funds.
Especially thankful that my husband got a date for next week to have a cardiac procedure done. It will be great to have it over with and hopefully will make him feel better.

  26. Congratulations on getting to this point and becoming an RN! You've put in so much work, and I've been impressed 'watching' it all. If you are even half as kind and competent in-person as you are online, your patients and their families will be blessed to have you.

  27. First just wanted to say I'm so excited for you to start your official RN work!! What an amazing journey to watch!

Second, I will try my hand at the thankful prompt 🙂

Thankful my two middle schoolers had pretty good days their first day back yesterday.
Thankful I was able to get to Pilates this morning! Fitting in a class before work feels like a luxury.
Thankful for the library system and the ability to place holds.
Thankful for having access to food as current events are highlighting how this is not a given, and it is heartbreaking and also a reminder not to take for granted what we have.

  28. Love seeing you in RN scrubs! Before you know it, you'll be on the floor brightening patient's day.
Our PNW mini heat wave is over and we are blessedly 25 degrees cooler today.
A horrible no good awful scary trespassor came to our home yesterday on foot. We have a 2mi driveway. I finally got him rounded up to the county road and kept him from going up the other neighbor's drives. Grateful to the mechanic driving by who is a friend of a friend, he called the sheriff. I didn't sleep a wink last night, but on the bright side, enjoyed the Perseid meteor shower.
Planting the fall/winter garden starts today.
My sweet farm cats, one affectionately called Old Man, 20 yo, lounges on the outside sofa, on his kitty quilt and our second oldest kitty brought him a mouse - alive. That was entertaining!

  29. I am probably more thankful than ever this week. And my momma heart is trying SO hard to adjust and smile through tears and ALL the feels:

    1) Tonight is our meet-the-teacher evening at my kiddo's new school (He starts Kinder this year). And I'm so grateful and thankful for the help that this new school is providing us in getting him used to this VERY big milestone in his life!

    2) So thankful that he is able to have this milestone. I do not take it for granted that there are many parents out there who no longer get to see first days of school for whatever reason <3

    3) That we've got family who want us to be present during a big birthday celebration tomorrow. And for jobs that are allowing us to take time off to be there.

    4) During any downtime this weekend while we're in Jackson Hole, we'll be celebrating our kiddo and having a fun weekend before school starts. Something that celebrates him <3

    5) For a friend who shared a simple instagram reel on how to help ease anxiety our kiddo may have as he goes into school (the gist of it is drawing a heart on his palm. And drawing a heart on mine. So when we hold hands, our hearts touch and "charge" special energy that he can use when he's at school and either missing home or worried about the new-ness. That he can close his hand in a fist and "activate" it). I'm planning on drawing a heart on grandma and grandpa's hands this weekend and surprising him that they can charge his heart, too!

  30. Am thankful to get my weekend of work done. I do like it and most of my coworkers, but not every personality gets along. I had a wise ADON that said "You just have to work together (cohesively) for eight hours. You don't have to kiss them on the lips."
I did not sleep any of the day yesterday however, as I had a hair appointment at 9a. (I got off work at 7a.) I needed a cut and perm badly. My hair is very fine and will not otherwise have any body or curl or stay out of my face plus it breaks easily with clips, barrettes, etc. and just barely holds a soft ponytail holder. A headband argues with my hearing aides and the earpieces of my eyeglasses and sometimes gives me a headache. I am thankful for my beautician that does a quick and safe job on my hair. The style makes me feel ten times better. The perm does last a long time.
I'm thankful Molly is in a "holding " pattern. Sunday night, she seemed a little more down physically. Yesterday and today she is more her current normal self.
    Thankful for cooler nights.
Still thankful for the the fresh fruits and veggies of summer. I planted my tomatoes the first part of June so they are just now taking off. I still am a little scared of the GERD they activate but I am hungry for and have all of the ingredients to make fresh salsa including the chips!

    1. YES. This is why a difficult patient is not at all the same as a difficult spouse or family member; you don't have to spend the rest of your life with a difficult patient!

  31. You look fabulous in those pretty fitted blue scrubs! Congratulations on all the new firsts you’re getting to experience!

  32. I totally agree with your online presence! I did the same thing for the my final years of online teaching as a retired professor, but still teaching as an adjunct. I’d be all dressed up with jewelry, etc. from the waist up and then wear shorts, yoga pants, or, one time … pajama bottoms. I really wanted to get to bed as fast as I could after that night class.

    My thankfuls are bittersweet …
*used airline miles to travel home for the funeral of a good friend. Still had to rent a car and pay for motel rooms and meals, but it made the trip doable and I was able to go at the last minute.
*saw so many dear people … I hope to see them again, but going home is limited as I have no family there anymore.
*my hubs was encouraging and supportive of the trip. The trip went off without a hitch!
    *the heat wave has abated!
*a friend is grieving the loss of both parents in a short timeframe. They invited themself to dinner last night, which was just fine and I easily made dinner for 3 instead of 2. I’m thankful they know they’re always welcome and our home is a safe and welcoming place.

  33. This is a good week for me to practice being thankful, though I suppose most weeks are!
    - My job, which gives me the paycheck I put mostly back for a future house. Despite my paranoia about the rather volatile industry, we are still busy and appear to be staying that way through the end of the year.
    - My parents, who are having their 50th wedding anniversary this month.
    - My health. I figured out that sitting improperly and lifting too much on the quad machine is probably aggravating my knees, which is a relief because I was afraid the knee pain was because of running or cycling.
    - A friend who, despite needing to cancel for the first time on one of our activities, is extremely reliable and has never "ghosted" me or dropped out on plans for frivolous reasons.
    - The thought I've been having this week: that I need to create more empty space in my life. The short opportunities I've had to do so have been calming and enjoyable, and I hope to do more.

  34. I am thankful this week that we finally made our move from New York City back to my hometown in Ontario, Canada. I didn't realize just how miserable and stressed we had been until we got here last week and magically became better versions of ourselves. My 13 year old is more relaxed than I've seen him in 10 months. It was a really scary decision to make, but man I will never regret it!

I'm also grateful that we are now living a 10 minute walk from my 82 year old dad's house. He has been over for impromptu dinners a few times and has even just dropped in on walks. To know that he is so close after 24 years of living in different countries and seeing each other twice a year is a gift that I will never stop being grateful for. Life is good!

  35. This week I’m thankful for my boyfriend who I didn’t think I’d meet in my forties, but there he was, we connected instantly and it’s been nine sweet years.
Garden tomatoes that are so delicious and abundant…my south west facing deck is full.
For a trip off the island…I don’t venture to the mainland often, but I did last week and it was so much fun! A ferry to the mainland and a harbour to harbour float plane home, no need for the car.
My cat’s cuts are healing. He got into a scrap with a neighbour cat and came out a little worse for wear.
Rain is in the forecast, possibly tonight and we need it desperately.
