Grocery Spending/Menu Plan |

These groceries wouldn't fit onto the counter, so they get their own picture.

Groceries on a wooden floor.

This week I spent $78.80 at Aldi and $38.34 at Weis for a total of $117.14.

What are we eating this week?

Breakfast options for the week are granola, toast, eggs, yogurt, fruit, and cereal.

Lunches will be comprised of sandwiches (made with whole wheat bread), homemade yogurt, yogurt smoothies, cottage cheese, fruit, raw veggies, nuts, cheese, and leftovers as necessary. Of course, we don't eat all of that every single day...it's just a list of the things we choose from for lunch each day. And Mr. FG eats leftovers for lunch pretty much every day.

This is the dinner plan:

Saturday

  • I'm not sure...we have a birthday party and I'm not entirely clear on whether or not a dinner meal will be served there. So, we're going to play it by ear.

Sunday

Monday

Tuesday

Wednesday

  • Meatball Subs
  • green salad

Thursday

  • BBQ Chicken
  • garlic bread
  • grilled veggies

Friday

  • Takeout date night for Mr. FG and me, something simple for the kids (this is often a leftover smorgasbord, or something like veggies, fruit, cheese, and bread)

  1. Great ideas!

The lemon sage chicken sounds delicious.

    Congratulations Amara! What a treat.

  2. that italian garden salad sounds nice! actually all of it sounds pretty good! I dont' have definite plans for the week but have some chicken breast cooked and shredded and may make some chicken spaghetti for meals at work when I start night shift rotation tomorrow.

  3. I wonder, does Mr FG get envious stares from his co-workers because he brings to work home-cooked meals for his lunch? I ask because my own husband used to bring leftovers from home for his lunch and his buddies would gape at him their mouths watering as he ate baked salmon with yellow rice, spiral ham with roasted potatoes or homemade baked mac and cheese. You don't even want to know the chaos that ensued when he'd bring in cookies I baked the night before. He swore he might not have made it home alive if he hadn't shared! I think it's rather funny!

  4. Your food shopping posts reminds me of one of my favorite books. It is titled "Hungry Planet; What the World Eats" written and photographed by Peter Menzel and Faith D'Aluisio. The authors photographs and write about a week's worth of food for each of 30 families in 24 countries. The famiies range from the poorest of poor to families of wealthy nations. The photography is gorgeous and it is well-written, definitely an eye opener. While I am not a parent nor teacher, I think it good be a great addition to teachng kids about other parts of the world. The book comes in a large hard cover style and a paperback. I'm guessing the paperback does not have the beautiful quality photos the hard cover has. Yes, "Hungary Planet is pricey but I highly recommend it.

  5. The lemon sage chicken sounds good. You would blow your budget buying that many bananas here In Australia. They are $12.90 - $14.99 a kilo at the moment. The two I buy every week costs me around $3.00.

  6. I love that you do this! I have just stared to do this myself and it crazy how much you can save just by planning ahead. I know, I have been sending my hubby to work with leftovers for a while now, and I get requests for leftovers from his co-workers. I am happy to send them along to the single guys eating Mac n' cheese every night! haha

  7. Not to snoop... but I will ;p The photo of the groceries on the counter... looks like theres storage under there? But it faces where you'd put stools. Do those cupboards get much use? Pain to move things?

Your cabinets are lovely btw 🙂

    1. I'm actually not a huge fan of the cabinets, and I've considered painting them. My problem is that I can't decide what color to use. My appliances are black, and I worry that black cabinets with black appliances would be too dark, but I'm not sure what other color to go with!

I do store things under there...we just generally don't use stools at that counter unless we need the extra seating when company is here.

  8. Good plans and shopping. I plan on trying the KFC chicken tip from the Penniless Parenting blog. I bet it will taste good. I like that stuff but it is expensive when you do not make it yourself. Enjoy your week.

  9. So I'm curious as to what you do for sandwiches. You mention them as a lunch option but do you just do cheese, egg and pb & j or are you buying meat/fillings for your sandwiches?
