Yeast Roll Roundup (for Thanksgiving)

If you live in the U.S., you’ve got Thanksgiving coming up this week.

And if you are going to be including rolls in your meal later this week, I thought this roundup of all my yeast rolls recipes would be helpful.

(I try to republish it every year around this time!)

For those of you outside the U.S., my apologies. Just take notes for your next special meal.

By the way, you can click the title of each type of roll, or you can click the bigger coral button. Both will take you to the recipe!

1. Basic Yeast Rolls

These are the classic American yeast roll; if you want something traditional, this is the recipe for you.

2. Honey-Glazed Pan Rolls

These are my very favorite rolls to make for gatherings.

I think I like them a little better than Basic Rolls, but my usual bring-to-a-gathering hesitation is that the glaze on these is most delicious when the rolls are hot out of the oven.

However, if you are staying home this year, then you will not have to transport the rolls, and you can eat them hot out of the oven.

Hot or cold, they are delicious and endlessly popular.

3. Whole Wheat Rolls

If I had lots of time, I’d be very inclined to make a batch of Basic Rolls and a batch of these to mix up in the bread basket.

4. Potato Rolls

A ring of these is quite lovely to behold, so they might be a good choice if you have space to leave the ring intact when you serve the rolls.

Also, because of the potato ingredient, these rolls will stay soft and fresh for several days, which is a boon if you have leftover rolls.

5. Cornmeal Buns

I forgot I’d even posted this recipe until this morning! These look a lot like a traditional dinner roll, but they’ve definitely got a different texture and flavor.

6. Butternut Squash Rolls

These rolls are on the sweet side of things and they have a lovely orange color that is perfect for a fall holiday.

7. Cheddar Twists

Granted, these aren’t exactly a traditional choice for a Thanksgiving meal, but if you don’t mind changing things up a bit, these are a delicious option.

Happy baking!

Thank you, Kristen! The other day I made your basic rolls in the cloverleaf and rosette variations and they were delicious! Will now have to work my way down the lineup...

I made CI's fluffy dinner rolls. Excellent. I made a test batch, then 2 double batches. I gifted a double batch to a friend and another pan to another friend. Try them, you won't be disappointed.

I have made SO many of your Frugal Girl dinner rolls thru the years-- and everyone always loves the potato ones and the basic. . . and I wanted to try something different so I make the honey rolls. And it was freezing and our heater was being repaired and the dough DID NOT RISE. At all-- and I was gonna throw it away but I decided to add more yeast (sugar, warm water) and reknead and put the rolls in the oven. And 30 minutes later? PERFECTION The rolls are great, fluffy, they rose beautifully and everything is gonna be swell for Thanksgiving tomorrow. Thanks for another triumph!

My produce box had a butterCUP squash in it this week. I used it to make the butternut squash rolls and MAN are they delicious!

Thank you for this round-up, Kristen. I started making your honey-glazed rolls for holiday meals a few years back and now my kids can't imagine a (Canadian) Thanksgiving or Christmas meal without them. In fact, just yesterday, when we were discussing upcoming birthday meals, one of my children suggested to another that he just have an entire pan of the honey-glazed rolls. Haha. He's not wrong to think of it - they're delicious!

Right now the cheese twists are calling to me, though. Maybe I should give those a whirl...

YES! That is a very good birthday idea.

To make them even more amazing, try making a batch of cinnamon butter. Then they're seriously like dessert!
