Coming next week at The Frugal Girl!

As most of you know by now, I do a great deal of yeast baking. I know that this is an intimidating sort of baking for most people so, armed with many pictures, I’m going to try to make it seem a little more do-able to you.

This summer I tried starting a baking blog, but posting recipes is very time consuming, and I couldn’t seem to keep up with it. I’m hoping that by incorporating the baking thing into this blog I’ll be able to manage better.

I was going to start this feature before Christmas but then thought better of it. Who has time to pick up a new kitchen skill in the midst of all the holiday craziness? And then I was going to start it this week, but today is New Year’s Eve, and you probably aren’t going to be baking bread today. So, starting next week(in the new year!), I’m going to try to have a baking post up every Wednesday. Some weeks it might be a how-to kind of post, some weeks it might be an informational post, some weeks it might be a tip, and of course, many weeks it will be a recipe(replete with pictures, naturally). And while I will post plenty of yeast recipes, I’ll also occasionally be posting recipes for things like biscuits, pancakes, brownies and the like.

Of course, this is a frugal blog and not a baking blog, but if you can learn to do some basic baking, you can definitely save yourself some cash(I considered saying you could save yourself some dough, but thought better of it. 🙂 ) and so I think that this feature will fit in just fine with the rest of my frugal postings.

I hope that this will be helpful to you, and I hope that you will be inspired to bless your family or housemates with some homemade goodness every now and then.

I'm looking forward to the recipes, too! I bake almost all my own bread, and nothing beats homemade hamburger/hot dog buns. I'm with Cheryl on the first recipe, though....that looks delicious (and fattening).

LOL Cheryl! I was actually thinking of starting with some very basic sort of posts...like one on how to knead bread, and then how to make a basic white bread.

I do have all the pictures taken for the monkey bread recipe, though, so I could start with that. I'll think on it. ;) Rest assured that the recipe will be coming at some point, though!

Dogear, I know it's pretty easy to fail at yeast baking. I think the easiest way to learn is to have someone show you how to do it. I figure the closest thing to that on the internet is a blog post with a bunch of pictures(considering I'm too clueless to do a video post! lol).

You've encouraged many of us to be more careful of what we do and how we do it. I think this is a great idea to encourage people to try yeast cooking.

I think the biggest hang-up is fear of failure. I have thrown out my share of bricks that even with toasting were not edible. Not all recipes are good. Those might or might not got eaten. And sometimes you proof the doggone yeast and 15 minutes later, still have a bowl of milk or water that has none of those poofy little clouds that I need to see before I mix it up.

So while we seek to be frugal, experimenting and trying new things can result in failure. We have to learn to accept it and move on. And yes, sometimes it wastes time and money. But I wouldn't be able to reliably bake bread (beans, grains, vegetables, you name it) if I had stopped experimenting.

Encourage your readers to experiment and not be afraid! Flour and yeast are cheap for what you can accomplish in the long run.
