Sonia’s been working on reading with me during school for a while now…we worked our way through the Bob Books and now we’re reading the easy reader type of books.
She’s doing great, and I’ve been encouraged with her progress lately, but she’s not been interested in reading outside of school time.
This week, though, she did something new. She found an elementary reading book on the shelf, picked it up, and sat down to read it, all on her own, just for fun (twice, even!).
That makes me very happy, because someone who reads for fun will read and read and read. And people who read and read and read have a much easier time with spelling, vocabulary, and composition (and that’s all besides the obvious benefit of absorbing the actual content of the book).
So, yay Sonia!

Yay Sonia!
Teaching my kids to read was my ‘high point’ of homeschooling.
That is a lovely thing to happen. I never thought my boys would ever want to read for fun–not like my daughter who couldn’t never get enough books to devour! Then one day, Tyler’s reading about world war 2 which I assumed was for school, but when I asked he said, “Oh, at school we’re doing the French revolution. That’s boring compared to this!”
I had to laugh! Hitler beat the guillotine…kids are funny.
Yay Sonia!!
My daughter just started doing that! She is in the first grade. I was so happy, I was elbowing my husband, “look she wants* to read!” That’s precious! I also bought her “Tag” . It is some sort of pen that reads over the words, I thought it may help her speed up a little. And a reply for Glory, my son started to bring home books on the “Presidents”. I thought it was for History class, but he says “no mom this is just for fun.” Yay, for reading! Kid’s are full of surprises!
People who grow up with readers typically become readers themselves. Eventually. And then yes, a gateway into knowledge, research, learning on one’s own, grammar (at an intuitive level), spelling[1], vocab up the wazoo, and the ability to entertain oneself almost anywhere and without electricity.
[1] Didn’t work for me at all, though. I still remember a 6th grade spelling test in which I scribbled out 7 different tries at the word. Within that 7 was the right spelling … not once but twice.
Yay Sonia!!! READ ON!
I love how her limber her legs are in that very relaxed pose. She looks very comfy!
I do so hope you share how happy your blog readers are with Sonia.
You are right, to see a child reading is a thing of beauty.
My daughter turned 7 last month & she has just started reading for fun instead of rolling her eyes and saying ‘I’m not doing school work now’.
