in Out and About

Yesterday was definitely the kind of day where you go back and sit in your car while the gas pump is going. Seriously, SO cold.

And it was definitely the wrong day to wear these shoes.

Be very careful doing that. In dry conditions, it can cause a static charge that can ignite the gas. (http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/blgas-static-fires2.htm)

I thought that as long as you discharge the static by touching a metal part of the car, it wasn’t a problem. Hmm.

I think that entering the car can recharge (if that’s the right word?) and cause a spark.

It’s actually illegal to do that in Massachusetts.

Not that I’m saying you’re doing anything wrong! There were so many times I wanted to do just what you’re doing, it gets cold! I just thought it was so weird when I moved to Illinois and saw those braces in the handle that let you walk away. We used to have them growing up too but slowly they all disappeared. My husband asked me once “why are you holding the pump? why not just let the brace-thingy do the work?” to which I replied “you’re allowed to do that!?”

:P

I gassed up in the Baltimore area early yesterday and it was COLD! But I stayed outside because the sign at the gas station said I should (static related).

The chances of gas fires are one in 12-18 billion-and any chance of a fire is eliminated by touching your car before fueling and once before you remove the nozzle. Given those odds, I might say that it would be worth getting in your car when its that cold!

This is why I live in NJ. We aren’t allowed to pump our own gas, so we are required to sit in our warm cars while a nice man pumps it for us. And no, our gas prices are no higher. We have lower prices than all the states around us.

Not sure what the laws are here, but I know that in self serve stations they don’t have the brace to auto shut off but they do at full serve stations….

That being said, I can’t get back in the vehicle. My OCD takes over and I’m always scared it won’t auto shut off! LOL

I once pumped gas at -50. It felt like my hand was on fire, even through my mittens, and it took forever. My face turned stiff, too.
