There’s nothing quite like local peaches.

I never, ever buy normal peaches from the grocery store.  No matter how cheap they get, I pass them by because I know when l take them home, they’ll go from rock hard to disgustingly mushy without so much as a pit stop at the softy and juicy stage.

During the summer, though, the local grocery store carries peaches from a local farm that’s been around since the 1800s, and when they go on sale for $.88/pound, I’m a happy girl.

Here in northern Nevada our so called “local” produce at the store comes from California which is over 300 miles away. Seeing pictures like this always makes me a little jealous.

I’ve been fortunate to have bought the most wonderful peaches twice now this summer. Once from a farm market in WV, $4.00 for 1/2 peck. I hope that they have more when we return later in August. Just bought peaches from a local place where I live and while not as good of a deal as the first one they do taste great. Real honest to goodness peach flavor and you have to watch that the juice doesn’t drip down your chin. This is the way that peaches are supposed to be!

I love local peaches too and I get them from the farmer’s market on Saturdays. They aren’t a steal at $.88/lb but they are so worth it! My favorite are white peaches…they are wonderful.

To the PP, my 21 month old daughter loves them….and always has the juice running down her chin. She will eat any and all within eyesight. :)

Fresh peaches! Yes! The only way I buy them – by the half bushel. We eat, we can, we freeze – all summer long. One summer I was fortunate to have permission to pick as many peaches as I wanted from a peach orchard that was not being harvested. That year I picked seven bushels – to eat, to can, to freeze, to give to others.

I wait for the Colorado peaches to arrive here in Nebraska. They are so delicious and juicy! I buy half a lug and use them in lots of ways, so I can use them up before they go bad. I always think I’ll freeze some, but enjoy eating them fresh so much that there is never any left to freeze!

I love fresh peaches and I love that grocery stores carry fresh produce from local farms. That is one of the reasons that I run in Walmart. I go in, I buy local peaches for 78 cents a pound in my re-usable bag, and go home and can them. I bought about $30 worth last time. It makes me smile to use cloth bags at Walmart. :)

Wow! Lucky ladies. We did pick ur own for $1.50 lb this week. Those included white peaches yum. At least I know all of my money goes directly to the farmer and his help and some petrol for the tractor and probably chemical use. I’ll admit I haven’t checked store prices. ok- just looked in the paper. One grocer has very local peaches for $1 lb and another has some grown in state for 48 cents per lb. Pick ur own are $1.79 lb at the very local orchard that is selling them at the store for $1 lb. I don’t know exactly what this says about the growers, stores and workers and I’m sure this is not the thread you intended but it certainly makes me wonder.

Dinner tonight was multi-grain cheerios topped with slices of fresh Fredricksburg, Texas peaches from the roadside stand. Freestone, of course. Yum!

You should re-think actually White peaches are picked hard and sweeten and ripen off the vine so to speak (of course, tree ripened floats my boat as well.

California peaches are beautiful- particular those in Brentwood.
