Sonia and Zoe’s hair has been a little bit too long for a month or two now. Length=more knots, tangles, and tears, especially for Zoe, so I gave them both a trim.
Lisey wants a haircut too, but she has such a thick, straight head of hair (which means it’s hard to cut AND that it shows every mistake I make!), I farm out the haircutting responsibility to my friend who does a bang-up job for $10.

She has such a cute smile! I’ve cut my children’s hair too for quite awhile. I finally gave up cutting my oldest boy’s hair – he goes with my husband to the ‘salon’. I do still cut my daughter’s hair (trim) and the 2 younger boys’ hair. One’s hair is very forgiving: it’s wavy and gets curled. So if you make a mistake, his hair will hide it in a day. My other one? His hair is straight – it shows every mistake. I have a hair cutting thing (the zip zip thingy) – can’t remember the name- but I don’t know how to use it. I’m intimidated by it. Do you cut your son’s hair? Any tips?
Ellen, I’ve cut my family’s hair for years now. Two of my daughters and one of my sons have curls, so it really hides any mistake. My other daughter has very thick, straight hair, so that one takes awhile to make sure it’s straight. I cut my older sons’ hair and my husband’s hair with the clippers. It’s not really too hard to do. My biggest suggestion is to just try it! The hair will grow back, so even if you make a mistake, it’s not the end of the world. Basically you use a very short length “attachment” for the back and sides, and a longer attachment for the top. After that, you take all attachments off, and with a steady hand, trim sideburns, over the ears, and the back of the neck. If you’re not sure which attachment to use, start with the longer one, because you can always go shorter, but you can’t go longer again!
@Ellen
Cutting mens hair has got to be the easiest thing! To me much easier than womens. I cut my fiances hair as well as his best friends and my fathers. The secret is to get a set of clippers with guides(the little snap on thingys) The set I have goes up to 1″ but they do make them for longer hair I think up to 2″? Im not sure. Once you have clippers with a guide the rest is quite easy. If you are ok with one length all over then pick the size and go to town going with and against the hair.My loving future husband has two of the most stubborn cow licks ever so cutting that can be a challenge but with the guide however you cant cut two short, which is great! If you want to do more of a fade you should cut the hair one length all over and pick an imaginary line and cut below that with a shorter guide. Now this parts tricky, remove the guide and free hand blend the two lengths together. Just remember if you mess up… it will grow back!
Good luck!
Kate
