Lisey’s science book instructed her to have a boat-building contest with her classmates. Since she’s the only one in her class, the rest of us filled in.
We made boats and then filled them with pennies one by one, to see whose boat design could hold the most pennies.
My boat (the large bowl) won, with 11 pennies, but Sonia’s boat (the really flat one on the right) was a close second.

Does playdoh come in brown? Or that a man-made color? Looks eerily like the color i made as a kid when i accidentally mixed everything together… hehe.
Love the experiment. And love the frugal ingredients for it!
Ha. Yeah, that’s a kid-made color. Play-Doh always turns brown when you combine all the colors. =P
Nice trick! Never thought of that.
I’m confused… explain, please?
I feel so silly, Franci! I accidentally left out the part about putting pennies in our play-doh boats. Whoops.
I fixed the post now…thanks for pointing that out!
I think if you put gitelan powder into the playdough mix it gives it color and smell. Koolaid mix might work as well.
Do you make homemade play dough?
A favorite frugal gift of mine is to purchase Thrift store cookie cutters and make a batch of home made dough. If I can find one I include a miniature rolling pin
I haven’t since I was a teenager. This is actually the first Play-Doh my kids have owned, and it was a gift. For years, I’ve steadfastly refused to have play-doh in the house because of the mess problem. lol
My kids seem to be old enough now to not be a complete and utter disaster with Play-Doh, though, so I should make some when their current batch dries up.
That is frugal gift for young children:)
You mean you don’t give that to your husband??
GREAT SCIENCE PROJECT!!!
Since I discovered Homemade Playdough, I love making it – the recipe makes a good amount, and you can make it any color you choose. Here’s my recipe.
Homemade Playdough
3 cups flour
1 1/2 cups salt
3 tsp cream of tartar
3 Tbsp oil
3 cups water
food coloring (color and amount that you prefer)
Mix all ingredients together in a saucepan, and heat over medium, while stirring, until it forms a sticky ball. Then put it out onto a plate and let cool a bit. Once it’s cooled, you can knead it a bit to finish mixing it. Store in a ziploc bag.
You are so inspiring Kristen. I love your take on life and your commitment to your walk with God and to your family. Awesome. You will reap the benefits of raising your children this way for years to come. Now that my children are grown I realize that raising them to be good children was not the goal but raising them to be good adults is. They will be adults far longer than they are children. And as much as I love your blog, if some time in the future you decide it’s time to turn the page on this part of your life we would all understand. Until them, keep it up girl! Your blog is a testimony to your goodness.
