My Camera Equipment

I’m an all Canon girl, for no particular reason other than that it’s the brand of the body I started with.  And now that I’ve invested a significant (to me!) amount of money into Canon equipment, I’m permanently in Canon-land.

I currently shoot with two Canon camera bodies. I started with entry-level Canon SLR body, the  Rebel XT
and recently upgraded to the Canon EOS 7D .

I own an 18-55 kit lens (which just means it’s the lens that came with my camera) that I rarely never use.  It was a great starter lens when I was first learning the ropes of my DSLR, but I use my other two lenses exclusively now.

My most-used lens is my Canon EF 50mm f1.4.  I love, love, love this lens.  It takes some getting used to at first, given that it doesn’t zoom in or out, but it’s awesome for portraits, close-ups, and low-light situations.  Plus, it’s not at all heavy or bulky.

My other lens is a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L. I love the build quality of this lens, and it’s SO much nicer than my kit zoom lens.  It is really heavy and bulky, though, so I usually keep my 50mm on my camera body.

Hi there! I found you via BlogHer and followed you to both of your blogs! Fun reading. I have a Canon camera, too…it’s just a PowerShot 720IS but I do like it and it does a pretty decent job. I’m trying to learn more about it because I know it’s capable of so much more than I do with it. And I’d love a new lens or two. Can you tell me where you buy your Canon equipment?

Thanks for any advice you can offer…off to read more of your posts :-)

I’ve gotten mine mainly from Amazon and from B&H. Sometimes one is lower than the other, so I go with whichever of those two stores offers the best price.

I can’t take a good picture to save my life…and between meetings and meetings, don’t have time to take photo classes. Do you have suggestions where I can find credible information, where I can teach myself. I have several cameras and couldn’t tell you the difference between them or why one camera is better than the other. I just point and shoot but I always envy the composition and the clarity of someone else’s photo. Think I have a Canon, which one, don’t know…I know they’re older. Suggestions on where to start?

Digital Photography School is a good website, and I’ve also done a number of posts on photography on my main blog. You can find them in the photography category: http://www.thefrugalgirl.com/category/photography/

Do you have any experience with sports photos? I have a Cannon also and I am having trouble with indoor action shots. I have tried doing a manual program and it helps but with the low light and the fastest exposure settings I am still having trouble.

I don’t do a lot of sports pictures, unfortunately! I do recommend switching your focus mode to AI Servo if you haven’t already. This is a continual focus mode, so it should help to keep your subject in focus.

Also, a fast lens is probably a good idea.

Kristen, I use similar equipment but I have a problem with dirt that needs to be cleaned up. Do you have a good tutorial you can suggest on this? Or is it safer to send in to Canon to take care?
