I bought this coconut-lined planter from Aldi early in the summer, and it’s been great except for the fact that the birds think the coconut liner is perfect for nest-building (next summer, I’m buying a small pinwheel for that planter, as I hear that they scare birds off).
So, when I gave Joshua a haircut on the deck, I put his hair clippings in the planter, hoping the birds will opt for those instead of my poor threadbare liner.

I also purchased the same planter at Aldi’s but no birds taking my liner. Smart idea with the hair.
Are they building their nest in the planter or just stealing material for another nest? I had a family of tiny wrens build in my hanging planter this year. It brought me such joy watching her lay the eggs, one by one, the baby birds hatch and grow and eventually leave the nest. I was able to peek in every day to see the progress and it didn’t seem to keep mama bird from coming back. I am sure the kids would love watching the babies. All the best….
EWWWWWW…and I’m eating my breakfast, too! Yuck.
Ok, now, what is so gross about hair? You see it on people’s heads every day! lol It’s not that different when it’s cut off.
Do you get grossed out when you look at the floor in the hair salon?
Yes…and hair in a hairbrush. EWWWWWWW
lol! This must make your life full of “eew”s!
Yet another reason why it’s good that you didn’t pay a fortune for the hanging planters!
The weird thing is, they haven’t touched my other 5 planters..just this one.
Dang, did Joshua have a lot of hair to cut off? Gunna make a few bird families awfully happy
He did! That’s because his mom took a while to get around to giving him a haircut.
theres a myth that if you throw your hair clippings out and a bird gets it you’ll have headaches for the rest of your life….lucky for you guys you probably dont believe it
If you have any old cds or cassette or video tapes, you can use them to make alternative ‘scarecrows’. Just unravel the tape and string it all up on a bamboo cane – the tape and housing moving in the wind are supposed to make enough noise to keep birds away. Similarly with cds you just tie them to a bamboo cane or stick – if you have a few they will make noise knocking together but I think the moving reflection is also supposed to play a part there.
I bet the kids have a stuffed animal, like an owl. My dad just bought an owl from Lowe’s for the squrriels to stop coming and stressing his chickens! I think you can hammer one near-bye…
When I was a kid, growing up in the country, my mom used to use our hair clippings and Zest or Irish Spring soap to keep the deer out of the garden. These are great, environmentally safe, deterants.
