Most notably, 80s fashions. Among other things like popped collars and Jams (blech! We both hated those even when they were popular.), Mr. FG and I recalled the popular practice of folding and cuffing our pants to make them even more tapered than they already were, and I decided to demonstrate this for the kids.
So, which of you will admit to doing this? Hmm??

This picture brought back so many memories from my youth. I used to roll and cuff my jeans all the time. I am glad that practice has gone by the wayside.
I did that. (Not any more!) But I forgot what a jam was?? Refresh my memory!
I was born in ’89 and obviously didn’t grow up in the eighties, but popped collars made a comeback in my high school and I DESPISED them!
hummmm that would be a yes for me……….didn’t do the collars… I was totally not a prep!
Yes!! Also can’t forget my usage of hairspray to get my hair just so…..I used to spend 45 minutes every morning to get it just right…..what I wouldn’t do now with an extra 45 minutes in the morning!!
Yup, we called it a French roll. Because then that made us sophisticated.
My brother still makes fun of me for my rolled cuffs.
And I deserve it.
i not only rolled my own cuffs, but because i was apparently so skilled, my classmates would ask me to roll theirs as well when we got to homeroom. we all have our talents!
Hehe!!!
We called that particular way to roll your jeans “tight-rolling”. Not only did I tight-roll my pants but I wore thick socks slouched down with Keds to complete the look. I have to show my husband this picture because he is quite a bit younger than me and thought I was crazy when I explained the trend.
Mr. FG is 7 years older than me, so he was more entrenched in 80s culture than I was (he graduated high school before the 80s were over, whereas I was 12 when they ended).
ME! I admit.
Oh ya…the rolled cuff. Hahahahaha
xo Jana
Errm Yep I did this too…….hmm and worse. Seems 80s fashion is back in at the moment, batwing sleeves and lycra skirts, haven’t seen anyone doing this to tapper their trousers though…….YET!!!
x
I am just jealous of your bare feet. It suddenly turned to autumn temperatures here yesterday and today it is snowing. I’m not ready for snow yet.
I was a teen in the 70′s, so I don’t have to admit to doing this cuff-roll thing; but you do have really pretty feet, Kristen!!
Aww, thanks. Growing up, my sister always told me how bad my feet looked, so I have low feet self-esteem.
I don’t recall that at all. Parachute pants and member’s only jackets, yes, but not the cuffed jeans. Perhaps it was a regional thing? I went to school in NY. Could be that.
What about shoulder pads, oxford cloth shirts and silk bowties for women in the work force?
Check, check, check!
What are/were Jams?
Wildly printed, loose shorts that looked a little like they were supposed to be swim trunks, but you wore them as shorts. Yuck.
I remember being in middle school and one of the girls gave a little informal tutorial on how to “tight roll” jeans.
Yep, we did that, but only when the jeans weren’t super mega tapered already. I remember one night my future father-in-law asking me how I got my foot out of the bottom of my jeans. They were so tapered they had a little zipper that you absolutely had to unzip so that you could put them on. Don’t forget the neon colors to go with the jeans, the Member’s Only jackets in every color imaginable, any kind of shoes by Bass, flats, short-sleeved sweaters especially the ones that had a v-neck on one side and boat neck on the other and were made to reverse, wire post dangling earrings, and add-a-bead necklaces. On an added note: we wore jeans so tight that when you’d get them out of the dryer you couldn’t zip them. You’d have to do deep knee bending exercises and squats to stretch them out just enough to zip them while sucking in your abs as tight as possible. Those were the days! LOL
Kristen, you have really beautiful feet! You could make a fortune as a foot model!=-)
Guilty. We called it “pinch-rolled” jeans. I’ve also heard it called “pegging your pants.”
We totally tight-rolled our jeans! My sixth grade science teacher was a very fashionable lady and she used to wear her white Z.Cavaricci pants tight-rolled with heels! LOL I feel so old !
I didn’t even have to read this to know what the picture was!! LOL!! (of course I did read it)
And, know I could still do it with my eyes closed! Too funny! Thanks for the laughs this afternoon!
GUILTY of doing this back in the day
I did this obsessively all throughout middle school. Like, I wouldn’t go to school without my jeans perfectly pegged. On top of that, I also rolled my socks down to below my ankle. (Not scrunched them, but rolled them. I was a weirdo).
Yes, I confess I did it and my friends and I were all the way over in Dublin, Ireland. I haven’t thought about it in years. I loved the 80′s and yet I do cringe when I see photos of the hair. Oh dear, the hairstyles! We loved them at the time…heehee…
I have to admit that I’m from the really old days when guys wore pegged pants. There was no rolling and cuffing. They were made pegged by sewing them. Some of the guys would have them so narrow at the bottom that zippers had to be put in so that they could get their feet through them.
I never did give into the trend of rolling my jeans like that. I always thought it was dumb, so I just rebelled! Lol! This trend is coming back big time with teenagers right now. Especially the kids who like the “skater” look.
Ha ha!! Yep, did that!
We called it tight rolling. Funny thing is my 12 yr old daughter is going to a birthday party this weekend and they are dressing up eighties style!! What fun!!!
Man…..I always rolled my pants. Some people would use safety pins too, but to me a good wrap roll was perfect.
