Five Frugal Things | apples, a frying pan, a coupon, and more

1. I promptly made applesauce with my bruised apples.

I left a few out for eating, but I turned the rest into applesauce.

(Here’s how I make applesauce.)

The jars are all in the chest freezer now.

And since some of you have wondered: yes, you can certainly freeze stuff in jars. You just need to leave plenty of headspace for the food inside to expand upward as it freezes, and then you’ll be good to go.

2. I bought a cheap frying pan for my costume.

I’m going as Rapunzel (post haircut, because I’m a brunette!), and I wanted a frying pan to go with my costume.

But cast iron like from the Tangled movie is way too heavy. So, I bought a cheap, very light Teflon pan from Goodwill and I’m spray painting it black.

(It should be noted that this is the only cheap part of my costume because my actual dress was kinda pricey.   But we are not going to focus on that because this post is not called Five Expensive Things.)

(Of course, I am going to resell my costume, which will help a bit.)

3. I used up the corn and the corn tortillas from my freezer challenge.

I made a taco salad, and I cut up and pan-fried the tortillas into strips to go atop the salad.

Sooo, tomato paste is all that’s left from this photo!

4. I spent almost exactly $50 to use a $10/$50 coupon.

Because this is what frugal people do. 😉

I had a $10/$50 grocery coupon, so I bought items that were on great sales and kept a running tally to make sure I got up to $50 but not much over.

My total after the coupon was $43, so, yay!

5. I used lots of misc. stuff to make my lunch.

It is a fabulous feeling, isn’t it?

Salads are such a handy way to use up random stuff. And scrambled eggs are too, incidentally.

I use straight jars with plastic lids for freezing. We froze the pesto and applsauce that way. Freezer was full of blueberries, but with the larger 2nd freezer there was plenty of room. We did fall clean up in the yard and hubby prepped the snowblower and tractor for the winter. Garlic is planted in the raised beds as well. Hubby cut up peppers, bagged and froze them. He did keep some out to make home made pizza last night. Kids look forawrd to it, each of the boys like theirs different, so he made four separate pizzas. Youngest like just cheese, older will eat mushrooms and pepperoni, but wonโ€™t touch the onions and peppers. And there was plenty for lefovers to heat up for another meal. Was a busy week, had to clean the house and do laundry. Between loads of laundry I had hubby give me a haircut, I was overdue, had a lot of splits and my ends needed attention, I wanted him to do it last weekend, but I had alot going on, and just didnโ€™t get to it then. So glad he can do it for me, he got the ends neat for me and it combs so much easier after a trim. I cannot imagine having to waste the time and money to run to the salon, I just donโ€™t have the time for it. It saves me hundrds a year and hubby always does a great job. Had to turn the heat on as it got chilly a couple nights ago. The warm fall has saved on the heating bill, but we keep it at 60 in the house and wear warm socks, slippers and sweaters. Loved the fall colors, but now sadly most of the leaves are down.

I LOVE the Frugal Five posts. Here is mine:

1) Free item from supermarket every week by using the club card and downloading the item onto it. What we don't use gets donated to the food bank that I volunteer at.

2) I'm the main donations coordinator for the school fundraiser and have gotten 30 businesses to donate and I will behave and NOT bid on a single thing. There are hotel stays, restaurants, lego toys, kors purses, etc... Nice stuff! But nope, I have enough stuff.

3) I tried a online supermarket delivery service and got FREE delivery plus $20 off my order. Sales were great, too.

4) I get hand me down clothing from my kids. They're guys but I just wear it to the gym and it serves my purpose. It's not a fashion show, right?

5) I walk to school with our son (2 miles) and only drive if it's snowy or rainy. Misty days are still walkable.

I second April's early commemts above re: Target Denizen Jeans..they are made by Levi Jeans. 27$ worth of AMAZING! I believe I have discussed this clothing item here before. I have 2 pairs of skinnys I wear for everything from weekend grocery shopping to after work hang out on the patio time. They are 4 yrs old and still going. I wear them often. They fit well, launder well and are super comfy. My 'Go To' go out jean is WHBM,a much more expensive product. But should these denizens die...I would definitely go shopping for more!!!

1) I forgot to eat breakfast this morning and luckily had to meet my husband at one of our vendors. This vendor is very sweet and keeps cold drinks and snacks for all of the guys coming in. And yeah, it is all guys except for me. We have a pest control company and I am the only female technician that EVER shows up there to buy chemicals, likely because there are only 2 female technicians in the entire state. LOL Women just don't go for this job. ;) They are nuts. The hours are flexible, the customers chatty, we hardly work at all in the winter (so welcome because the warmer months ARE busy) and I am helping people. Also, since we own it ourselves the money is amazing. Anyway, I had a granola bar and a water and survived until lunch. 2) LUNCH...I wanted my new favorite salad from Noodles & Company but my practicality won out and I dropped by the house on the way to the next job and threw together a salad of odds and ends and used the last bit of hummus in the tub to whisk up a salad dressing. It was almost as good as the salad I really wanted and lots cheaper. 3) I didn't buy the milkshake I wanted after a hot and difficult job. Why is this all about food today??? 4) I am gathering the coupons scattered out of the mail and my pockets all around the house and creating a grocery list based on them. Discarding the ones for things I wouldn't normally buy, of course. 5) The bills are stacked up to be paid today so that they are all early. I have a terrible habit of forgetting and paying late fees. They are all ready now to be paid online just before the due date. I feel like a real adult tonight. ;)
