What I Spent, What We Ate | Sick Week

I had a nice menu all planned out for this week and then on Sunday night, I caught the crud from Mr. FG and Joshua.

My well-laid plans came gently crashing down.   😉

Also, the early-in-the-week grocery shopping plans didn’t exactly work out either.

But, we made it through, and I’m on the mend (though still rather stuffy.   Good thing blogging doesn’t require talking!)

What I Spent

Oohkay.   Here’s how the shopping went:

My produce box came this week ($34).

I stopped at Costco (where I bought the bulbs I hate!) and spent $73.20 on coffee and frozen berries.

And I went to Aldi and spent $92.22.

That means my total for this week is $199.42.

I’m not at all surprised it’s on the high side because A) I went to Costco and B) I bought more expensive foods this week for convenience because I was sick.

That is almost always cheaper than takeout, though, so I feel like I made the right choice.

What We Ate

I am relieved to say that we didn’t end up getting takeout at all while I was sick, although Mr. FG ended up getting most of his work lunches out.

While that’s not my favorite way to spend money, a lunch out for him is way less damaging to the budget than getting takeout for all six of us at dinner!

Monday

Mr. FG had a late meal at work, Joshua had eaten by the time he got home from work, and I wasn’t hungry (too sick), so the three girls made some French toast for themselves.

Tuesday

I was up for easy cooking by Tuesday night, so I made chipped beef on toast.   And on the side we had sauteed green beans.

Wednesday

I finally made it out to Aldi, and I picked up two of their pre-marinated pork tenderloins.   I baked those, toasted English muffins, cut up some fruit, and called it a night.

Thursday

I made pizza subs.   Yes.   Pizza. And not on a Friday.   It just worked out better that way this week.

Friday

Since I’m obviously not making pizza, I think I’ll make some hibachi chicken and shrimp.   My produce box gave me two zucchinis, so…

Hope you all are feeling better! We are currently paying off ~$600k in student loan debt and so we're always looking for ways to cut things out of our budget. Convenience food is really such a killer! But what can ya do when you are sick. Plus you are right-- most likely better than getting take out! Feel better soon!

I am still recovering and cannot lift anything heavy. I honestly could not tell you much about meals this week as we have scrambled along and done our best.

I send my best wishes to everyone who has been in hospital or unwell. It makes life with a family much more difficult.

It was a crazy week--hooray for slow cookers! I would have been doomed without mine!

Saturday: Iowa Girl Eats' potsticker noodles

Sunday: slow cooker maid-rites

Monday: slow cooker maid-rites, grape tomatoes, apple slices

Tuesday: pulled pork sandwiches, Parmesan ranch potato wedges

Wednesday: cheeseburger mac, roasted Brussels sprouts

Thursday: spinach Alfredo pizza

Friday: smorgasbord!

It was a leftovery week here too, since I'm also sick.

Monday was Thanksgiving, so roast chicken with roasted potatoes, baked butternut squash, and spinach, with plum cake for dessert (my mum's not a fan of pumpkin pie)

Tuesday we had roasted zucchini and peppers with leftover venison over rice.

Wednesday I was out for dinner with a friend.

Thursday I made chicken noodle soup with the leftovers from Monday.

Friday we had roasted pasnips and apples with chestnuts and bacon over pasta, because I got stuck at work and it's both quick and seems indulgent.

Wow. I'd be really upset if my husband couldn't/chose not to pack his own lunches when I was sick. It's not that hard. Any functioning adult should be able to pack his own lunch. Sad.

It's not that; the problem is that he normally takes leftovers, and most of the meals we ate didn't work as leftovers. And since I hadn't gone grocery shopping, we didn't have stuff around to make alternative lunches either. Plus, he was recovering from the same crud I had, so he wasn't full of energy to go grocery shopping after work.

Mr. FG did successfully pack lunches when he was single, and he is happy to do it now as well; I just choose to help him out by putting lunches together for him and making a breakfast smoothie for him and for myself.
