Instead of a Q&A post, today we’re going to have a picture post about our vacation.
(Apologies to those of you who read this blog solely for the practical, frugal advice. Today is not your day. )
Instead of going to the beach for two weeks this year, we decided to go for only one and to use Mr. FG’s other vacation week now.
So, we booked a week at Massanutten, a resort near Harrisonburg, Virginia.
We thought a change of pace would be fun for everyone, and breaking our vacation up gives Mr. FG a more even vacation distribution, which is good for his state of mind.
There were several playgrounds there, which thrilled Sonia and Zoe.
Is Sonia’s hair not amazing? It sticks up and is messy without static, but with static, it’s even crazier.
What is it about slides that compels children to walk up them?
So, what did we do besides play on playgrounds?
Well, on Monday we went to Massanutten’s indoor water park. It’s pretty darn tootin’ expensive, but since we got such a good deal on our condo (through my parents’ time share) we had vacation budget money to spend on it.
I decided, miracle of miracles, not to take my camera.
I thought it would just be a pain and that I would enjoy our time more without my beloved camera. So, I have no pictures to share. If you want to take a peek, though, there are a couple of photos on the waterpark site.
It was super fun and totally worth the money. Although, I think it will be more fun to go back in a couple of years when Sonia and Zoe are a little bit bigger.
On Tuesday, we went snow tubing.
We chose the coldest day of the week to go, which wasn’t that cold (it was unseasonably warm all week!), and happily, that day ended up being half price day. Woohoo!
Thankfully, you don’t have to walk up the hill..they have an escalator-type thing that hauls you up.
We got warmer and warmer as we tubed, as you can see from these next 3 photos of Zoe.
Zipped, coat, hood, and mittens.
No mittens, unzipped coat, and no hood.
And then we finally dispensed with the coat altogether.
Tubing was a perfect activity for the age and stage our family is in, because everyone could do it.
Sonia and Zoe screamed all the way down, but they were happy screams.
I hooked my tube to theirs and rode down backwards to take these photos.
And just so that I’m not completely absent from our vacation photos….
The next day we took it kind of easy because Sonia and Zoe were pretty tired after two fun-filled days. We slept in, played ping-pong and board games, and visited another park.
Sonia posed herself for this picture…”Come take a picture of me, Mommy!”.
I rode in a car with Zoe, but she drove too fast for my taste.
On afternoon, Mr. FG took Lisey and Joshua to an arcade, and I stayed with the girls at the condo to give them a bubble bath in our jetted tub.
I didn’t really realize just how sudsy a jetted tub can get, though. The girls were practically drowning in suds and I could not stop laughing.
Amazingly enough, my girls feel there IS such a thing as too many bubbles. We bailed them out in bowls.
And dumped them in the sinks.
And decided that for the next bath, we’d skip the bubbles.
We also took a little trip to Luray Caverns since we were so close.
A cavern is not usually my preferred photographic subject, but it was a fun challenge.
I took a lot of very bad shots, which I will not bother to share with you.
This is a little lake inside the cavern, which perfectly reflects the stalactites that are on the ceiling.
My favorite formations were the draperies..they really do look like folds of cloth, except that they’re made of rock!
My kids’ favorite were the fried eggs (the guide says that’s the thing everyone remembers!).
I don’t have a wide angle lens, so it’s hard to show you how immense the cave is once you get inside.
We walked through the automobile museum at Luray, and by the time we got through that, Zoe was very tired of walking.
We mostly ate in the condo, because that’s more frugal, of course, but I did have some restaurant gift cards from our credit card reward points, so we ate out two nights.
They’re looking at lobsters, in case you were wondering.
Friday was Mr. FG and Zoe’s birthday, so we brought their presents on vacation with us.
More on the birthday presents later.
In addition to the dinner gift cards, I also had a $25 Panera gift card from our credit card reward points, so we had breakfast there on the birthday.
Sonia and I warmed our feet by Panera’s fire.
Why did I take a picture of us going through a car wash? I dunno. What else are you supposed to do while you’re waiting for your car to get clean??
Remember how back in December, the kids and I were trying to decide if we should spend our HomeGoods gift card on a gingerbread house kit?
Well, I got one on clearance at Aldi for $2 right before vacation and brought it along with us.
I know it would be much more fantastic to make one from scratch, but I never get around to it. And besides, I’m not really too sure I could make one from scratch for $2.
Saturday morning, we packed up and bid adieu to the mountains.
Sigh.
How exactly does a week fly by so quickly when you’re on vacation???
On a cheery note, though, Massanutten is only about 3 hours from our house, so driving home was a piece of cake compared to driving home from Myrtle Beach.
Tomorrow Mr. FG goes back to work, I teach piano, and we start homeschooling again, so we’re going to have to jump back into real life.
Boo.
But, we’re grateful we had the opportunity to get away and relax for a week.

My younger daughter would love that waterpark. The faster the ride the better as far as she’s concerned. I’d settle for the lazy river.
What a good idea to split your holiday in half. Twice as much to look forward to beforehand … and to remember afterwards.
What a great post, Kristen and some amazing photos
I particularly love the one of you and your gorgeous children
Sounds like you had a fantastic week.
Oooh, we’ve been to the Luray Caverns! Fun place. Your vacation seemed a perfect getaway and birthday(s) celebration.
I love love love getting the gift cards with money back from the credit card company! I take two little friends to Red Lobster every year for their birthdays and they love it! We feel like we are fine dining and its free!!!
Wow, looks like you all had a great time! Great pictures, everyone looks so happy. Glad you had fun
Looks like you all had a great time.
It’s good to split your holiday throughout the year, it gives you two breaks to look forward to and enjoy.
Funny, we timeshare all the time. It is one way to get more vacations in because you save a TON on eating in. We love it and doubt we’ll ever go back to a hotel room for week long stays. In fact we haven’t stayed in a hotel room in over 10 years except twice but they were short stays like one or two nights.
Thanks for the heads up on a wonderful vacation spot. Harrisonburg is only about 2 hours from us so that would be totally ideal sometime. We’ll keep it in mind for future vacations. Glad you had a great time.
Will you be my mom?
Katy
If you promise not to leave messes around my house, then yes! Come on over.
An additional requirement is that you need to be sure you’re not camera-shy.
I’ve been to those caverns! It was almost 20 years ago and I STILL remember the fried eggs (I thought of them when you mentioned you went to Luray Caverns, before I got to the picture of them!)
I hope your kids remember them as fondly as I do, 20 years from now
Sounds and looks like everyone had a great time. I like that it was inside, outside, water, snow and underground – everything so different but so much fun!!
Just out of curiosity – do you incorporate your homeschooling with your vacation plans?
When my boys were young their school was not the best – sorely lacking in anything but the very basics except sports. So my hubby and I spent time with the boys and vacation plans doing geography, math, researching places, history, etc. Even tho they did complain, I find that now they are doing the same thing with their kids – go figure.
We usually don’t do any formal schoolwork while we’re gone, but since life as a parent is sort of a life as an educator, my kids do learn stuff while we’re gone. Luray was pretty educational, and when we’re at the beach, we talk about the animals on the beach, why tides work the way they do, what the difference is between bivalves and univalves, and so on. It’s mostly just talking about stuff as it comes up…informal, life learning.
*I* would want to cry if we had to do math on vacation. I need a break from helping people correct math problems. lol
Our vacation math was more on the how much will it cost for all us to do.. and
how many pounds of hamburger will it take to make 5 4oz hamburgers. None of
that formal math for us on vacation!!
Oh, now that I could handle. Just not the 30 problem papers that I have to correct. =P
My daughter attends James Madison University, which is very close to Massanutten, and last year (around this time) we spent a couple of days skiing and snow tubing. It was a very expensive couple of days, with ski rentals and all. It is great that you got 1/2 off of the tubing. We, too, stayed at my friend’s timeshare, which made it a bit more reasonable.
I LOVE that you were able to take a vacation in the middle of February. We can’t, being that my younger two are in public school. We are in the process of trying to figure out a summer vacation, that won’t break the bank. This post gave me a good idea of where to look.
Glad you had a great time, thanks so much for sharing!
Which state are you from? Thanks for sharing the lovely pictures.
Negella-
I get the impression that Kristen intentionally speaks only vaguly about where they live to protect the privacy of her family.
Yep! There are online situations that sometimes make me feel skeeved out (a reader wanted to marry me because I was so beautiful, which weirded me out a great deal) and because of that, I prefer to keep my exact location a little bit under wraps.
I’m happy to share that I live in the DelMarVa area, though! And were it not for the occasional creepy internet person, I’d be tickled to be more specific…it’s not my nature to be mysterious. lol
I grew up in Northern Virginia in Fairfax County and from some of your posts I thought you lived near where I was from but we didn’t have an Aldi or Weis. I haven’t been back in 10 years, when I moved to Southern CA, I do miss it sometimes but where I live now has tons of snow but milder, less bone chilling winters. Also blue skies, so I’m happy in Flagstaff!
Massanutten resort, located in the Shenandoah mountains of Virginia, also has THE MOST AWESOME INDOOR WATER PARK EVER. It’s astronomically expensive, but it was also a super-fun time for our whole family and we did everything else for free/nearly free at our cabin, so I don’t feel too guilty.
FRUGAL TIP: next time I go there or anywhere similar, I would book us as a “party,” because the pricing includes some food and beverage and even though you often have time limitations (usually a number of hours or a time of day), with a party of 9 we definitely would have come out ahead.
Last summer, it so happened that my parents came up from Tennessee to take their vacation in the Shenandoahs, while I was simultaneously booking a few nights for my family and in-laws, plus I had a work retreat out there, so I spent quite a bit of time there last July. I cannot recommend it highly enough for a fun getaway. There are exciting things, interesting things, and relaxing things. With the exception of the water park (believe me, I looked!) there are lots of discounts and coupons in travel guides and online for attractions, accomodations, and restaurant food. Overall it was much cheaper than when we went to the beach the year before. Oh, and if you’re so inclined, there are some excellent wineries and vineyards in the Valley. The locales are breathtaking, and the wines are unlike any others I’ve ever tasted. You can also access the Skyline Drive, which is just lovely.
Can you tell I loved it out there?!? A great reprieve from the suburbs and the summer heat!
Sounds like a great time was had by all! Thank you for sharing some pictures with us.
Great Post! and lovely to see your family have a great time. But I miss you blogging hahaha
welkom back!
How much fun! Next time you go tubing, though, I wholeheartedly recommend having everyone wear ski helmets (some of the places have ones you can borrow if you don’t own any). At this moment I am sitting at my desk with a heated pack on my neck to try to relieve tension stemming from a horrible tubing collision 3 weeks ago. It was at a place like you picture, with separated tracks, but the operator made a mistake and sent my tube down the hill without seeing that my 6-year-old daughter and her friend had somehow gotten stuck halfway down. My head collided with the little girl’s head at full speed, and there was no way to avoid the collision since I didn’t see her until a second before we hit. The little girl did a flip in the air and landed on her stomach but walked away without injury, possibly due to her helmet. Her parents had made a last-minute decision for her to wear it, and they are so thankful. I’ve also been at one of the places when someone accidentally fell out of a tube, too, so there are other possible ways to hit.
I love the pictures that you took by from linking to the children’s tubes!
I am feeling quite the kinship to you and your family–first with a vacation to Myrtle Beach (like I used to do) then a trip to Massanutten (where we used to go to visit good family friends.) That was before any resort was there, however.
Years ago, I heard the legend of how Massanutten got its name. Supposedly a visitor to the area asked his servant what the name of the mountain was before him. The servant replied “Massa, nutten.” In actuality the servant said, “Master, nothing,” but Massanutten stuck. I don’t know if the story is really true, but I remembered it just the same.
I tried to make a gingerbread house several times – it never worked very well. I can bake architechtural gingerbread just fine but it’s a pain and a half to assemble. My houses were always crooked and one collapsed. Now I buy premade.
I’ll note that my experience is that kids under about 5 yo get just as much pleasure from decorating cardboard spread with icing, than from decorating an inedible gingerbread house.
They are adorable. I am so glad you all had so much fun. Wow. I need one of those tubs in my bathroom.
Great post. Enjoyed the pictures!
Two vacations in one year!?! Awesome! I am, however, green with jealousy.
Aww it looks fab! It reminds me of when I was a kid. My mum and dad used to make things so much fun.
Is it true that just 2 weeks off a year is normal in the US? I’ve got friends in America who get the same. I can’t believe that’s all people get! Here in the UK I get 35 days a year + 8 bank holidays too (+1 extra this year for the royal wedding, and 1 the following year for the queen’s jubilee…the royals do have their uses!). And that’s poor by European standards.
I think we have a complex, I think. Still trying to “prove” something? LOL
Today’s news included a story about our terrible paid maternity leave standards…or lack thereof.
Tubing looks so fun! Thanks for sharing.
Wonderful vacation!!! Thanks for sharing with us. Looking at those wonderful pictures made me feel like I was on a vacation!! Everything you do just seems so full of love for your family and they seem to be thriving on it!! Thanks again for sharing!!
Most wonderful vakay! LOVED the bubbles, kind of like a Lucy episode. What a fun and memorable time for your family.
Sorry, I didn’t mean to invade your privacy. I understand the safety issue. It’s just that I live 3 hr away from Luray Cavern and that got me wondering where you might be from.
. Wish you all the best girl.
Oh, no worries! You’re totally fine.
Oh…. Luray! I have always wanted to go there! Im a geog major, You know your education is serving you well when you look at photos and are able to identify the cave system by its formations(I admit somedays I enjoy your photos more and don’t read the text until I have seen the photos)! Caves are such great learning experiences! So much cool stuff happens in caves. There are many caves on the east coast that were once filled with pianos and chapels. People used to used them as hangouts during the hot summers!
Looks like you guys had a blast!
