Food Waste Friday | I have power this week!

Every week, I post a picture of the food that has gone bad over the last seven days. Why do I do this? Because in March of 2008, I finally got fed up with the amount of food I was wasting, and I thought that showing my waste to other people would motivate me to use up my food instead of wasting it. Because this often embarrassing practice was so helpful for me, I invited other bloggers to join me in posting their food waste photos, and Food Waste Friday was born. If you’re not a blogger but still want some food waste accountability, feel free to participate by leaving a comment.

Last week we didn’t manage to have a Food Waste Friday due to an errant oak tree that landed on our power lines.

I’m back now, though, and I’m happy to say I have very little waste to report. Nothing in my fridge is rotten and the only food I threw away this week was a cup of almonds. I was sugaring them and accidentally burnt them to a crisp (the recipe even said “DO NOT BURN.” Ahem.). Fortunately, I was using my very high quality All-Clad skillet and it did not warp the way a lesser pan would have! Phew.

The nuts went into my compost bucket on Wednesday and I don’t have a photo….I was just hurrying to get them out of my pan before the sugar mess hardened further and didn’t think to grab my camera. 😉

Well, this week was my first attempt at making yogurt and I ruined it beyond saving. Beyond, "Oh, I'll use this up in smoothies." It was just trash. Other than that, I didn't waste a thing! Hurray.

I learned a lot and I know how to do it right now, but I was so looking forward to yogurt! We haven't bought any in a long time because it gets expensive.

That is my project for tomorrow!

None at home. Funny given that recently I decided that striving for no waste was too much stress - trading a little wasted food for much less stress was a good trade-off for me.

A little waste at work: by the time I'm at work my yogurt (for cereal) will be bad and I forgot about the 2 roast beets. They'll be next week's waste on a technicality.

Have to get rid of some (old!) yoghurt this week but that's it. One week into another start-fresh-month and so far I'm keeping on track with eating and spending what I've planned. It's a start!

You did great this week! And Karen S.? I say if you gave it away it is surely NOT waste. Someone used and appreciated it and that has to count for something.

Hmmm...what do you think of this strategy? I actually gave my extra food to a neighbor, before it became waste. I sent over 1/3 bag white potatoes, hamburger buns, and 1/2 a head of lettuce--all stuff I wasn't going to be able to use before it became waste. So, let me ask you--is it waste--or not, if it went to a neighbor and not in the trash?

I think it's a great idea! Goes back to the farmer style of blessing your neighbors with your abundance when the crops come in.
