Food Waste Friday | Two things

Every week, I post a picture of the food that has gone bad over the last seven days. Why do I do this? Because in March of 2008, I finally got fed up with the amount of food I was wasting, and I thought that showing my waste to other people would motivate me to use up my food instead of wasting it. Because this often embarrassing practice was so helpful for me, I invited other bloggers to join me in posting their food waste photos, and Food Waste Friday was born. If you’re not a blogger but still want some food waste accountability, feel free to participate by leaving a comment.

Yesterday Lisey and I were using up some excess apples by making applesauce, and we came across a bad apple. 😉

And a single slice of whole wheat bread (it’s homemade…it’s just stored in a re-used bun bag from Weis!) grew some mold before I got to it.

This is a slice from my ugly loaves, by the way!

I'm not at home this weekend, but the recipe is from the blog Poor Girl Eats Well. If you search her recipes it should pop up. We liked it, but I thought it need more add-ins like craisins or raisins, and sunflower seeds, and maybe some celery.

I cringes when I saw that apple peeler photo. That is how I used to make applesauce too until I found this AWESOME tool! http://www.amazon.com/Velox-Tomato-Press-Strainer-Italy/dp/B00127T8UI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1284153600&sr=8-1

It says it's for tomatoes (which it works wonderfully for) but for applesauce it was truly miraculous - and I am not kidding. All you do is wash apples, quarter (DO NOT PEEL or core) simmer in a pot with a little water or apple juice until soft and crank them through this baby and WAL -LAH - perfect applesauce!

Mine was a little cheaper than this as it did not come with that little container pictured. But soooo worth it!

That's a pretty good week, Kristen well done and an awesome interview you gave too - really well done on spreading your message about frugality :)

I love making homemade applesauce. Doesn't matter whether the apples are fresh off the tree or getting a little soft, it always tastes great! I think this week was my worst food waste week ever.

about a cup of pineapple curry quinoa salad and also some plain quinoa. We like quinoa, but my husband cooked this and started with the amount raw that was listed as the end cooked amount in the recipe, Mountains of quinoa! We got through most of it but burned out at the last bit.

Jenny - I would love your recipe for Pineapple Curry Quinoa Salad. I love quinoa, but as of now I only have one recipe for it!
