Food Waste Friday | Yes!

in Food Waste Friday,Food Waste Photos

Every week, I post a picture of the food that has gone bad over the last seven days. Why do I do this? Because in March of 2008, I finally got fed up with the amount of food I was wasting, and I thought that showing my waste to other people would motivate me to use up my food instead of wasting it. Because this often embarrassing practice was so helpful for me, I invited other bloggers to join me in posting their food waste photos, and Food Waste Friday was born. If you’re not a blogger but still want some food waste accountability, feel free to participate by leaving a comment.

This week, I have a big fat nothing to show you, because I wasted no food. Yay!! And I didn’t even have to force down any yucky leftover salmon in order to avoid waste.

Not only did I avoid food waste, I also have a fridge that is remarkably void of about-to-go-bad items. If you’ve been fighting food waste along with me, you know what a good feeling that is.

Given the semi-empty state of my fridge, maybe I’ll have two no-waste weeks in a row!

The focus of my food waste this week was eating up other people’s food waste. Sound disgusting? It wasn’t. Click my link above to read all about it. ;-)

One thing that I’m sorry for: two pieces of homemade rhubarb-custard pie. It was very rich.

Then the usual odds and ends: some broc went brown before I got to it, a few moldy cherries, rice from take-out, etc.

The real problem is yet to come. A well meaning relative sent me ELEVEN POUNDS of ribs. I’m not much of a rib-eater. Looks like I’ll be having a party.

I had to toss out one zucchini this week, although the other two purchased with it were fine. I’m trying to figure out why one item will spoil while others purchased at the same time are still good and all looked/felt OK at the time of purchase. It’s very frustrating!

Oy! I was sick this week, so I’m afraid that means a fair amount of food was wasted. Not only did I *eat* much less, but I was unable to cook as well. So the kids had pasta and meals from the freezer, rather than using up the fresh food. I was able to give some away to my brother, but some just plain spoiled. I hate that! But there’s not much you can do about getting sick once in awhile.

At least I had lots of food ready-to-be-heated in the freezer, so me being sick didn’t mean takeout.

Yay for your no-waste-week!! I did not have such luck. I lost some amazingly yummy strawberries simply because I bought too many! :-( You’d think I’d learn my lesson on that….but obviously I have not!

Just some few odds and ends this week. My room mate’s orange juice, some free hummus, some cream cheese that apparently had a death wish, and scoop of slaw.

Well I’m just joining in here as you can tell by my bench of shame with how much food I threw out – hopefully this will lead to more organising and planning so this doesn’t keep happening

No food waste at all this week. Stuck to my guns at the farmers market last week, planned out the meals and we didn’t waste a thing.

We wasted two slices of French toast! I didn’t realize my husband hadn’t eaten it and it was hidden in the refrigerator. I think he must be crazy, because wasting French toast is just about unimaginable to me.

Ooops, food waste friday became saturday this week. But not much got wasted this week, which feels good.

I have to say I am also finding it vastly amusing that every single time I have typed food waste friday so far I have actually typed food waster friday. What can I say? It’s very hot and really silly things like that seem funnier than they might normally :-)

Dear Mrs. FG,
This is not food waste Friday related, but I wanted to say thank you on behalf of my family. The other day I checked out your blog after a long absence (about 2 weeks) and was inspired to make a good dinner. We had roast pork with a muskadine-apple reduction sauce, english peas, pineapple, and fresh french bread. It was all gone in under 20 minutes!
Wait a second, this is somewhat f.w.F. related as the reduction sauce was made from the muscadine jelly which has been feeling Soooooo lonely in the fridge for months on end (does that stuff ever go bad?) and the less than one serving of apple juice left in the jug. After that, I poured in the juice from the pineapple, some cornstarch, and let it simmer away.

I just wanted to let you know that sometimes you can inspire people in ways not intended ~ I am a horrible cook and would have never tried this, except for your f.w.F. posts.

thank you,
Angie

This is GREAT! To stop wasting food was on my list of resolutions this year–I think it will be the biggest way to trim our grocery budget. So it’s very comforting to find a group of people focues o nthe same thing. I didn’t do so well this week either–I was sick and didn’t get to cooking everything I’d planned. Going to make a crisp this afternoon with some of the marginal fruit.
