Every week, I post a picture of the food that has gone bad over the last seven days. Why do I do this? Because in March of 2008, I finally got fed up with the amount of food I was wasting, and I thought that showing my waste to other people would motivate me to use up my food instead of wasting it. Because this often embarrassing practice was so helpful for me, I invited other bloggers to join me in posting their food waste photos, and Food Waste Friday was born. If you’re not a blogger but still want some food waste accountability, feel free to participate by leaving a comment.
This week, the only thing I wasted was a quarter of a thin slice of whole wheat bread. I noticed it and was about to toast it and eat it, but it was moldy. And I don’t eat moldy bread.
I didn’t manage to take a picture of it, though…sorry (or maybe, “You’re welcome!” is more in order, because it’s not like moldy bread is really fun to look at!).
No other food has gotten slimy or hairy in my house this week, though, so that’s good. Unfortunately, I am in the unhappy position of having two pieces of leftover fish in my fridge, and we all know how that went down last time. This is tilapia, not salmon, though, so I might be able to swing this. It’s definitely not going into my scrambled eggs, though!
Oh, and do come back this afternoon because I’m going to publish a reader question that I’m unable to answer, and I need your help.

Too funny, I had moldy bread and did take a picture of it!
*Bread* went into your compost pile?!?
More than half a melon, boo! It wasn’t very tasty to start with, which is why I was slow to eat it. I expect the sliced swiss cheese someone gave me is going into the compost as well – I don’t like swiss cheese and sliced cheese gets stale/hard very quickly.
Still haven’t decided whether I’m morally responsible for the wastage of someone’s food.
I haven’t written about food waste for two weeks now – not because I didn’t have any! Life just interfered with some blogging. First it was about half a cup of slimy salad, then six or more soft, sprouty potatoes (and it was a new bag – this wasn’t my fault) and a couple of rotten onions. This week, I know there is a saved beef sandwich in the fridge that is going to the dogs, and I hope the leftover salad will be edible tonight. I count on the household to always eat at home together, but this week has been a bit mercurial in terms of schedules (a big wedding this weekend) and I’ve had to adjust meal plans quite a bit.
Can you dice up the fish, mix it with tuna and some herbs, and use it on a sandwich like tuna?
I am been really lacking on the food waste commitment. Life has gotten cray busy (no excuse) and I have not been making a good enough effort. I am going to get back on track this week and hopefully have a good report next Friday. Thank you Kristen for always being consistent and being here when I need a reminder.
Leftover tilapia screams fish taco to me. This would be a double whammy if you have any of that pesky cilantro around that so many of us have trouble with.
I ended up wasting cantalope.
That was it this week.
A really awful, terrible week of waste here, the worst being a whole gallon of milk left out for seven hours in the hot car. Lots of other stuff as well: lettuce, spinach, a whole package of dates, an avocado and more milk, so we can only hope to do better next week.
Yum @Brandy! I love fish tacos!
We had a lot of leftovers go into the trash earlier this week. They were all from last week and I knew it was going to happen, but I just couldn’t bring myself to eat another serving of squash casserole. Reheated squash just doesn’t do it for me.
How about fish tacos or put it on top a salad with vinegrette dressing.
If you don’t have enough leftover fish for fish tacos, toss any leftovers (minus the breading if fried) into vegetable soup at the last minute…just long enough before eating to give the soup time to warm the fish that has been cut into bites. For those folks who add beef to their veg soup this wouldn’t work, but leftover fish works well in tomato based soups.
I try to catch bread and throw it in the freezer to toast and smash up for bread crumbs. I have just started reading this blog, and love this idea. I have been trying to limit food waste here, and this week it was one ear of corn on the cob. I had only bought 4, but hubby didn’t ‘feel’ like corn the night we cooked them. Unfortunatly, 5 days in the fridge later…. yuck.
I had a bell pepper and a cantaloupe go bad this week. I am not sure why the pepper turned, as I bought 3 others at the same time and they are fine. The cataloupe was pushed to the back and it got too cold and partially froze. It was really mushy when thawed. I haven’t tossed it yet, because I might try using it in a smoothie.
