Grocery Spending-I bought some flour. a LOT of flour.

IMG_6472The oddest thing happened after I posted my silly letter to Safeway on Wednesday.  I hit “publish” and then went outside to get the newspaper.  As I was perusing the ads I came across Safeway’s, and lo and behold, Gold Medal flour was on sale!  Yay!!!

The price this week is $1.50/5 lbs, which is higher than the $.99 price that makes me uber happy, but considering that I was utterly and completely out of flour, $1.50 sounded pretty good to me.

My only worry was that the unbleached wouldn’t be included in the sale (the bleached flour was pictured).  I even felt slightly nervous as I entered the flour aisle, but much to my delight, the unbleached WAS included!  Woohoo!

So, I bought 17 bags of flour, which cost me $25.50.  Because I spent $25 on baking items, I got a $5 coupon off of anything I buy on my next shopping trip.  Bonus!

I cannot tell you how happy I am to be “in” flour again.

I decided to keep things simple this week, and so Safeway was my only stop.  Here’s the other stuff I bought:

All told, I spent $64.62 of my $400 grocery budget for November, and I am really, really happy with that, especially considering I bought a ton of flour.

Soo, my first week of shopping with only cash bore some pleasing results. If only I could make it through every week with only $64!

By the way, if you ever get to a Costco, they have unbleached flour in 20lb or 25lb bags for under 10 bucks… It would not be as great as a deal as today, but it is better than most regular prices.

I got the same deal- Gold Medal 5lb for 1.50. Our store is called Ralphs. It may be the same as Safeway, now that I think of it, because we used to have Safeway.

I’m looking forward to using unbleached instead of bleached from now on, thanks to you. Thanks Kristen! It was one of those habits I’d just done my whole life without thinking.

I’m REALLY hoping for some good flour sales at our Kroger! We usually buy the organic storebrand, but I’m not terribly loyal when it comes to flour–we use so much that I can’t afford to be TOO discerning.

I bought 9 bags of flour today: $1.79 for 5 lbs, and it was part of a deal where you get a $15 coupon when you buy $30…so it was practically free! Yay for cheap flour!

Hi, I got the Gold Medal flour for $1.50 a couple of weeks ago. This week my Albertson’s had
Pillsbury 5# for $1.00. So don’t give up hope, the .99 or 1.00 may come your way soon.

Yay! I really need to keep my eyes peeled for a flour sale around here. We are hosting the holidays for the first time, and I know I’ll have a ton of baking to do!

I bought a lot of yogurt this week, too! I had a bunch of $1 off coupons, so I was able to get several 6 packs of yoplait, for only $.75 each! I also was able to get some Dannon probiotic yogurt 4 packs for only $.65 each. I had like 10 yogurt coupons, so I’m sure that made the store happy…Especially since I had like 20 coupons for other stuff as well:P I don’t care, though…So far this month, I’ve spent $61.38 of my $160 budget for November! I was only able to pull this off, because last week Food Lion was doing triple coupons, so I only had to spend $20 for the whole week!

I did this stock-up too! I also got chocolate chips and walnuts with the sale, which I don’t normally splurge on. I think I’ll go back later in the week for more flour. :)

@yenny I don’t think white flour is particularly healthy, no. But neither are marshmallow pumpkins, and that hasn’t stopped me yet. lol If we were perfect, we’d eat whole grains all the time, but we’re not perfect, so we don’t. ;) We do eat whole grain breads at breakfast and lunch most of the time, but even when I make whole wheat bread, I use half whole wheat flour and half white flour.

Penny Saver, I’m hoping to go back too!

@yenny Ahhh, I see! Well, I figure that unbleached has got to be more healthy than bleached flour, because I don’t see any good health effect that could come from bleaching, you know?

I mostly use it because it performs better in baking, doesn’t have an “off” taste, and because I like my baked goods not to be completely and utterly white. I think bleached flour looks sort of weird.

I do use it in a pinch, though.
