In these days of diet confusion…

(should we eat vegetarian? vegan? organic? local? high-protein? gluten-free? grain-free? sugar-free?)

…it’s sort of comforting to eat organic, grown-in-compost produce from your backyard.

I’m fairly sure almost every diet out there would be ok with this (except maybe a macrobiotic diet).  It’s local, organic, vegetarian, low-sugar, and low carb.

Not to mention frugal and delicious.

I agree…..we started a little container garden on our deck this year. So satisfying and yes….frugal! There truly isn’t anything like the taste of a homegrown tomato.

Macrobiotics emphasizes locally grown veggies – so a home-grown tomato is absolutely perfect (and tasty!).

The only way to know exactly what you’re eating is to grown it yourself. But if that’s not possible, whole foods are the way to go.

All my tomatoes succumbed to frost a week ago. The green ones on the fridge are ripening slowly, but aren’t anywhere near as beautiful.

Can you fill it with Hamburger Helper? Then you could use coupons! ; )

Oh yes, Katy! Because I’m all about prepared foods and coupons. :p

Froogal Doogal, I thought a tomato was a nightshade and that those aren’t allowed on a macrobiotic diet. I’m not about to go macrobiotic, though! lol

Yeah, I can tell that from your photos. I get uneasy sometimes about some of the food photos posted on some frugal family sites. There seems to be a lot of prepared foods relative to the fresh ones. Don’t get me wrong, I like me my junk and convenience foods – but those alone make for a poor diet. Poor diet leads to poor health. US’ans these days spend on the order of 10% of income on food while our grandparents spent 25-30%. If you have the money (some don’t), saving it at the expense of a healthy diet doesn’t seem like a good trade-off.

Which is why I find your food photos reassuring. Not that I have any influence over or responsibility for your family’ eating habits, but that’s what happens when you put parts of your life online. It’s like a whole new batch of inlaws!
