Menu and Grocery Spending

in Grocery Reports,Menu Plans

I do actually have more than pictures this week!  :) They are up first, though.

Produce:

And everything else:

Well, everything else except for my two jars of milk, my blueberries, and the butter I stocked up on (see below).

I have a fairly complicated grocery report. First, I spent $6 on milk from the farm. Then I stopped at a local store to buy some butter (it was on sale for $1.66/pound), and spent $13.19 there.

On Thursday, I got 20 pounds of blueberries from New Jersey, and spent $28.

So, before I even left for my regular trip, I’d already spent $47.19 of my $100 budget.

That left me with only about $53 to spend. I spent $39.74 at Aldi, and $13.03 at Weis. Happily, that put me right at $99.96, $.04 under budget! ;)

We’ll be eating our usual breakfasts (granola, toast, fruit, and some cereal) and lunches (leftovers, bread, fruit and yogurt smoothies), and here’s what we’re having for our dinners:

Saturday

  • Cajun Chicken Strips
  • Mediterranean Vegetable Salad (I do realize that’s a weird side for Cajun Chicken!)
  • Cheese Bagels

Sunday

  • We’ll be at a friend’s house for a cookout, and I’m supposed to bring fruit.  I will probably bring a watermelon.

Monday

  • Chicken Salsa Skillet
  • Zucchini patties

Tuesday

  • Shrimp Salad
  • Fruit Salad
  • English Muffin bread

Wednesday

  • Mexican Chicken Sandwiches
  • Balsamic Vegetable Salad

Thursday

  • Grilled Hamburgers
  • raw veggies
  • fresh fruit
  • probably some potato chips

Friday

  • Deep Dish Pizza
  • green salad

Oooh, yummy! Can I ask where you get your milk and where you got the blueberries? G and I really want to find a local place to get milk from. Thanks!

Those blueberries look sooooo yummy! What are your plans for them? I could just eat them plain!

Woahhh those blueberries look amazing. I’m also interested in what they’re destined for, unless its just fruit & vegetables over the week.

Your grocery report sounds a little like mine…a trip here, a trip there and still managing to get in under the line :)

….Also, I appear to be the third commenter in a row with a K name. Freaky.

Are you going to turn the blueberries into preserves? See I wish I had 20 pounds of blackberries, because they are my favourite berry!

Kalee, the blueberries came straight from Jersey. Every year someone from my church drives up and brings back a trailer full. The milk comes from a cow that my sister-in-law’s mom owns, actually! lol

We’ve eaten a TON of blueberries so far, and I froze three gallon bags of them to use in baking and in our fruit and yogurt smoothies. Even frozen blueberries are pretty expensive, so I’m thrilled to have gotten so many for so little money.

Kate, let’s hear it for the K’s! Liz, I’m sorry that you’re not in the K Club with all of us cool people. lol

The squished berries on the lid let me know this is not a stock photo. ;)

Yum, fresh blueberries! I had to laugh that you just bought 20 pounds of blueberries, and on your menu you said you’re supposed to bring fruit to a friend’s house, and you’d probably bring watermelon.

hiptobeme-yeah, I only use stock photos or Flickr Creative Commons photos when I don’t have one of my own (which doesn’t happen allll that often! lol).

Angela, I’m too selfish to share my blueberries. I’d rather share a watermelon, which I can buy any old time. The blueberries are a once a year thing.

Yum! Those blueberries look SO good!

In the summer we can go pick blueberries for $10 a kilo, which I thought was a good deal until seeing the one you got, and that without the effort of having to pick them!

It’s shocking how many stuffed animals you buy every week!

Haha! If you saw our stuffed animal bin, you would start to think that I DID buy a bunch every week.

Question … and maybe you have answered it in the past … What food do you include in your weekly menu that you do not purchase. I know that you make yogurt, breads and granola. Is that all or do you have other things on hand that you don’t include in your weekly budget? I hope that my question makes sense.

Hi Julie!

Everything I need to make my meals is included in my budget. The milk I used to make the yogurt comes out of my budget, the honey, nuts, and oatmeal I need to make the granola comes out of my budget, the flour I need to make bread comes out of my budget, and so on.

You won’t actually SEE everything I need each week, though. For instance, I bought a bunch of flour at Easter when it went on sale, so I won’t need to buy any for a long while. And while we’re eating plenty of chicken this week, you didn’t seen any in my photo because I have chicken in the freezer that I bought at $1.49/pound and then froze.

What I buy each week when I shop at is a combination of fresh things (milk, produce), and things that are on a good sale (like the shredded wheat in my pictures). Of course, some things are always a good price at Aldi so I buy those each week (like mozzarella for our pizzas).

Anyways, because I stock up on things like chicken and flour when they’re on sale, you won’t seem them each week, even though I do use them each week.

Wow! That is a LOT of blueberries. And I can’t say I’ve ever seen blueberries that blue. Usually the ones I get are almost purple.

I don’t know about other parts of the US but here in the Pacific Northwest blueberries are VERY easy to grow. We have several bushes in our backyard, and so have them in smoothies, pies, and baked goods all summer. This spring we picked up 3 more plants for about 5$ each.

Funny, I was going to ask about this very topic. Clean stuffed animals are always in demand.
