Breakfast Week-Orange Julius and Strawberry Syrup

To wrap up breakfast week, I have some breakfast accessory recipes, if you will.  ;) I don’t always make these two items when we have breakfast for dinner…sometimes we just have plain orange juice and regular syrup, but when I’m feeling more inspired or have more time, I use these two recipes.

Strawberry Syrup

Ingredients

2 cups frozen strawberries(you can use fresh, but they’re usually more expensive)
1/2 cup water
2 cups sugar

Puree the strawberries in a blender or food processor until smooth(you can leave a few chunks if you prefer). Combine berry puree, sugar, and water in a saucepan, and heat to boiling, over medium heat, stirring occasionally.

Reduce heat and boil for five minutes. This can be served warm or cold…it will be a bit thicker if you let it cool first. Store in the refrigerator.

Orange Julius(or Special Orange Drink, as it’s called at our house!)

This recipe calls for a small can of orange juice concentrate, but those are a lot more expensive per ounce than the larger cans are. So, I buy a large one, scoop out half the can, and put the other half back in the freezer to use later.

You can reduce the sugar if you like, and you can also reduce or leave out the vanilla if you’re not a fan of it.

Ingredients

1 cup water
1 cup milk
1/2 cup sugar
1/2-1 teaspoon vanilla
6 oz. frozen orange juice concentrate
10-12 ice cubes

Combine all ingredients in a blender, and process until smooth and thick. Serve promptly.

I’ll be back tomorrow with a regular food waste post. :)

When I was a little girl back in the ’70′s, I used to BEG my mom for an Orange Julius at the mall, it was such a treat. She was a frugal German and of course did not want to buy me one very often. So nowadays, when my son wants a treat from Jamba Juice, I give in a little bit more frequently than she did. But not every time, those things are pricey!!
Thanks for posting the recipe, that brought a smile to my face!

Oh I also wanted to say thanks for the strawberry sauce recipe because I hate maple syrup so I’m always looking for alternatives. Another story from ancient times: we frequented a breakfast place called the Village Inn and I loved it because they had containers of brightly colored fruit flavored syrup in addition to maple. I always ordered the dollar pancakes and put a different flavor on each. Every night before he goes to sleep, my son wants me to tell him a story from when I was little. When I protest that I can’t think of a new one, he says “tell me the pancake story” and that’s the one he means. Talk about cheap entertainment!

Julia, I forgot to mention that you can use different berries in the syrup too…so you could recreate the Village Inn experience. lol

Hmmm. One is forced to wonder – how would the orange julius work if combined with the strawberry sauce?

Excuse me, I have a sudden need to head to my lab… I mean kitchen!

(I also have 25 pounds yet of frozen sweet cherries I need to use up that may have to get tossed in and tried in this.)

Thanks for the idea. I’m always looking for ways to get more fruit into my diet and find something other than my usual oatmeal (or more often, nothing) for breakfast.

Just made the Orange Julius with cheese quesadillas after returning from a very moving, very hot and humid Memorial Day parade and service at our township’s veteran’s cemetary. The drink was awesome! I used 1/4 cup sugar . Kids loved it – said it was just like the one at the mall (at what – 70 percent cheaper?) Poured the remainder in a Zip Lock and freezing it. Plan to pop it in the blender for easy summer drink.

You are my hew Hero!!! I am soon to be 12 weeks pregnant and have been CRAVING an Orange Julius real 100% fruit Smoothie (but would never allow myself to go on an unneeded trip to the mall)… I am thrilled I can make one at home now!! I squealed like a little kid when I read your post! My husband said.. “well I think I can guess what you’ll be making this week!” Thank you very much!!

We LOVE Orange Julius! Here is the recipe we use:
1/2 cup milk
1/3 cup orange juice concentrate
1/2 cup water
2T sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla
enough ice to reach desired consistency.

Mine ends up always being too thick so I thin it down with orange juice (not the concentrate.) To boost up the healthfulness of it, I often substitute vanilla yogurt for the milk. Yum!

How many servings do these make, especially the Orange Julius?
