Food Waste Friday(on Sunday!)

img_0228

This week, I wasted a small bit of seafood dip. It’s over a week old, and I just don’t feel right eating seafood that is that old. We did plow through an impressive number of leftovers this week, but somehow this fell through the cracks. It’s not much, but I’m very annoyed that I let something with crab meat in it go to waste!

How did you do? If you posted about it, link us up to the appropriate post on your blog(Rachel, of ModernMommyhood, I know you have a picture to post!).

I was very successful at using up my food this week - and have a picture of my super clean fridge on my site. I made chili for 9 people for under $5 and had enough leftover to feed my family of 4 for lunch and dinner the next day. Now, however, we've had enough of chili for a few days...

Steve's comment puts me in mind of my dad and his 'continuation soup'. He started by combining two different packet soups and making them up per the instructions on the packet. The next day he took the leftovers and added another packet and/or any other leftover food lurking in the fridge ie gravy, cooked vegetable, rice, pasta etc. And so it went. I'm not sure where he stood viz a viz health and safety legistation but it tasted delicious and, along with his porridge (to which he added dried fruit, nuts and cardamom!), it's what my eldest daughter misses most about him.

I had a completely successful week! I remade the 7 day old soup that was in 2 different containers in the fridge into new, better soup by adding some more ingredients, combining it with the cooked lentil and black bean dip that had been sitting in another container, and thickening it with more ground lentils and flour, and made it into a kind of tangy flavor by adding 3 capfuls of lemon juice. Now the soup is enough for about 2 days of lunches and dinners and didn't go bad.

Also I saved the lentil/black bean dip from going bad!

I am taking it to work tomorrow for lunch!

I am a bit shocked, but seem to be on target for spending under $60 in food for the month of January. That would be nice if it actually happens--we'll see.
