I was all excited to clean out my fridge this week because I thought the only thing I’d have to throw out was a little bit of grilled chicken. Then I remembered that I should look in my vegetable drawer. Sigh. I found half a cucumber that was turning to liquid and some green beans that were far past their prime. Still, I’m pretty pleased…this is n o t h i n g compared to the food-in-the-trash fridge cleaning fest that I used to have monthly(or whenever I started to run out of leftover containers!). And of course, the only thing I had to actually throw in the trash was the chicken…the beans and cucumber are now continuing the decomposition process in my compost bin.
Another good thing about cleaning my fridge is that going through the veggie drawer reminded me that I had several(good)cucumbers and some green beans to use. I steamed the green beans and cut up the cucumbers(we eat them raw with salt. On second thought, why did I need to say that we eat them raw? Seriously, who eats cooked cucumbers???), and we ate most of them for dinner tonight. And so, as of this moment, there’s nothing in my vegetable drawer that is about to grow hair on it or turn to mush.
I’m really hoping to have absolutely no waste to take a picture of next week. That has never happened so far, except on weeks where I skipped fridge cleaning altogether. I’ve come so close the last two weeks, though, I think it could happen(especially because I have no plans to buy cilantro this week!).

Hiya
That;s a brilliant week for food waste, and as you say, the fresh stuff has become a ‘resource’ anyway; it’s only a bit of chicken that was actually landfilled.
Well done you – I think you will soon be celebrating a zero waste food week!
Thanks for stopping by!
And thanks for the encouragement…I appreciate it.
I just stumbled on your blog…..but your comment about cooked cucumbers made me laugh. You see, just this morning my sweet husband made us a scramble for breakfast. Ina n effort to use up things that were going to go bad, he put cucumbers in the eggs. I saw him preparing them and I said “Cucumbers? ” He seemed to think they might cook up like zucchini. I was pretty sure it would not turn out well, but I was just happy to have someone else making breakfast, so I didn’t complain!! And yes, cooked cucumbers in scrambled eggs does indeed taste as gross as it sounds!!!!
LOL!!! Well, that’s good to know…I won’t ever try to rescue a cucumber by cooking it. =P
Hi there, back-reading your blog, a lot of thought provoking things here! Great job! I just wanted to say, I first tried cooked cucumbers at a chinese restaurant overseas (not in China) I liked it, and now I often add cucumbers near the end when making stir-frys. Really good combo w/bell peppers and other greens for a simple and fresh taste.
